History

2005-06: Junland had incredible development this past season, being the highest scoring defenseman in the Swedish juniors. His numbers, 40 points including 17 goals in 32 games, are quite remarkable for a defenseman. He added about 16 pounds of muscle before this past season and it had a very good affect on his play.

2006-07: Junland played most of his season with SEL finalist Linkopings. He fared well, despite his youth, and enjoyed an excellent playoff run, which saw him net five points in 15 games. He also played briefly with the junior team and in Allsvenskan league in preparation for the World Juniors, a tournament where he was one of Team Sweden’s top players.

2007-08: Junland played in a career-high 52 games for Linkopings HC (SWE) this season. The blueliner recorded three goals and 17 assists, and added another seven points (4g+3a) in 16 postseason games.

2008-09: In his first taste of North American hockey, Junland was a potent offensive defenseman for the AHL's Peoria Rivermen. He scored 13 goals, 18 assists for 31 points in 70 games, earning a spot in the AHL All-Star game. He skated in 5 playoff games with Peoria, scoring 1 assists and 6 PIMs. He also made his NHL debut with St. Louis, but did not score in 1 game.

2009-10: Junland again spent much of the season with Peoria, scoring 14 goals, 30 assists in 74 games. His 44 points led the team's defensemen and his 11 power play goals led the entire team. He played in the AHL All-Star game for the second consecutive year and got a little longer look in St. Louis, appearing in 3 NHL games and notching 2 assists.

2010-11: Junland was tendered a qualifying offer by the Blues in June 2010 but chose to sign a one-year contract with Farjestads BK in Sweden's Elitserien. He scored 5 goals with 17 assists and was +7 with 18 PMs in 41 regular season games. Farjestads finished tied with HV71 and Skelleftea atop the league standings with 96 points and won the playoff title. In 14 playoff games Junland scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was +8 with 12 PMs.
 

Talent Analysis

Junland is a good skater and has fine hands. Hockey sense is good and big strength of his is the way he gets the puck on the target. Junland has a good shot that is very accurate. Looking at the parts of his game that Junland should improve, his defensive awareness could still use some fine tuning. He could also play more determined and more physical at times. Also, sometimes Junland tends to overwork easy situations.

Junland is now playing for Astana Barys in the KHL.

He is the most physical of Hamilton’s defencemen. He loves the hip check on rushing forwards trying to beat him on the boards. He is a bit slow afoot, and is beaten on the outside by faster forwards. He will fight, but he hasn’t been too successful in his scraps.

Plays a decent 2 way game, and hits well. His scoring touch is suspect, as is his speed. He should find a spot with the Bulldogs next season.

Daniel should probably be back in the AHL next year. He has the speed to play in the NHL but didn’t seem to have much hockey sense here. He never seemed to fit in, and was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs. He’ll need to have a big year in Hamilton next year to stay on track (especially with Comrie and Riesen expected to improve immensely next year).

Red Wings 2000 and Beyond

With the Red Wings early exit in the playoffs this spring, it leaves one to wonder what is next for the team of the 90′s. The future does not look that much brighter than Detroit’s hockey plans for the remainder of the summer. The team is likely to have several new faces at the start of training camp in the fall. Name tags may even be required for a team that has not seen a great deal of change for several years save for some deadline deals.

This spring the Wings traded much of their future to ensure success this playoff season. After trading a top forward prospect ( Petr Sykora ) and a 3rd round pick for the return of Doug Brown last fall, the Wings parted with what little future they had left in March. Anders Eriksson and TWO first round picks ( 1999 and 2001 ) were sent to Chicago for Chris Chelios. A 2nd and 3rd rounder were sent to the Rangers for Ulf Sameulsson, while a 2nd rounder and prospect goaltender Kevin Hodson were moved to Tampa Bay for Wendel Clark. That leaves the Wings with no pick sooner than the 4th round in the 1999 draft and no 1st rounder in 2001. As a result of the 1997 Brendan Shanahan deal that sent their 1997 pick to Carolina , the Wings will have two 1st rounds pick in a span of five years. Not the things that champions are made from.

Rochester Mustangs Name Craig Norwich Head Coach

(Rochester, MN) – The Rochester Mustangs of the United States Hockey League have announced the hiring of Mr. Craig Norwich as the new Head Coach and General Manager.

Norwich is a former Minnesota High School hockey star from Edina, MN, who brings with him extensive knowledge of the sport and several years of coaching experience. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin before playing professionally. His first professional game was with the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). From there he graduated on to the Winnipeg Jets, the St. Louis Blues, the Colorado Rockies and then the Springfield Indians (AHL). After spending five years playing pros in the United States, he went over to Europe and played eight years in the European Professional Hockey League.

Norwich was also a member of several World Ice Hockey Championship teams – 1977, 1978, 1981 and 1983. He is the recipient of several individual hockey awards: two time All-American in the WCHA, 1976-77 NCAA All-Tournament Team, 1978-79 WHA Top Scoring Defenseman and WHA All-Star, was a member of the NHL’s Top Ten in Plus/Minus in 1980 and a member of the 1983 World Ice Hockey All-World Team. He acquired his Elite Level Coaching Certification in 1998 with the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation.
