History

2005-06: Junland had incredible development this past season, being the highest scoring defenseman in the Swedish juniors. His numbers, 40 points including 17 goals in 32 games, are quite remarkable for a defenseman. He added about 16 pounds of muscle before this past season and it had a very good affect on his play.

2006-07: Junland played most of his season with SEL finalist Linkopings. He fared well, despite his youth, and enjoyed an excellent playoff run, which saw him net five points in 15 games. He also played briefly with the junior team and in Allsvenskan league in preparation for the World Juniors, a tournament where he was one of Team Sweden’s top players.

2007-08: Junland played in a career-high 52 games for Linkopings HC (SWE) this season. The blueliner recorded three goals and 17 assists, and added another seven points (4g+3a) in 16 postseason games.

2008-09: In his first taste of North American hockey, Junland was a potent offensive defenseman for the AHL's Peoria Rivermen. He scored 13 goals, 18 assists for 31 points in 70 games, earning a spot in the AHL All-Star game. He skated in 5 playoff games with Peoria, scoring 1 assists and 6 PIMs. He also made his NHL debut with St. Louis, but did not score in 1 game.

2009-10: Junland again spent much of the season with Peoria, scoring 14 goals, 30 assists in 74 games. His 44 points led the team's defensemen and his 11 power play goals led the entire team. He played in the AHL All-Star game for the second consecutive year and got a little longer look in St. Louis, appearing in 3 NHL games and notching 2 assists.

2010-11: Junland was tendered a qualifying offer by the Blues in June 2010 but chose to sign a one-year contract with Farjestads BK in Sweden's Elitserien. He scored 5 goals with 17 assists and was +7 with 18 PMs in 41 regular season games. Farjestads finished tied with HV71 and Skelleftea atop the league standings with 96 points and won the playoff title. In 14 playoff games Junland scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was +8 with 12 PMs.
 

Talent Analysis

Junland is a good skater and has fine hands. Hockey sense is good and big strength of his is the way he gets the puck on the target. Junland has a good shot that is very accurate. Looking at the parts of his game that Junland should improve, his defensive awareness could still use some fine tuning. He could also play more determined and more physical at times. Also, sometimes Junland tends to overwork easy situations.

Future

Junland is now playing for Astana Barys in the KHL.

Last year, the Sharks had perhaps the best trio of rookies, in Patrick Marleau, Marco Sturm, and Andrei Zyuzin. This year, the Sharks have had another group of rookies, who may not have been as touted as the above mentioned three, but have done fine jobs as well. Alex Korolyuk and Andy Sutton are the two main factors. Scott Hannan and Shawn Heins each played in five games for the Sharks, but due to limited games played, will not be included.

Marc was Montreals 6th choice (92nd overall) in the 1992 NHL entry draft. Marc is entering his 5th season as a professional and was signed by the Chicago Black Hawks as a free agent on August 1996. He is entering his 3rd season with the Indianapolis Ice. Spent most of the 1997-98 season with a groin injury. Likes to challenge the shooters. Lets the shooters see very little net. Very quick glove hand, and reflexes. Very few rebounds given, quick to get back in position when down. Handles puck well. Though he has a few groin injuries that caused him to miss a few games. Has not let the injuries hamper his style of play, always comes out and gives 100% everynite. With the way Marc plays it won’t be long before he is in a Chicago uniform. Read more»

THOUGHTS ON SWEDISH FINALS

After having contributed nothing to Hockey’s Future during the last two months because of a huge amount of work thrown my direction, I now have a couple of hours free to write a column.

The finals in the Swedish Elitserien ended earlier tonight after an exciting best-of-five series where the fifth and deciding game crowned the champions – and it was the underdog team Brynäs that won 4-2 in the end after stellar play by big New York Rangers goalie prospect Johan Holmqvist. Holmqvist proved at the age of 20 that he could handle the pressure extremely well, and that he is capable of coming up with the key save at the key-moment. Hype is now running high on Holmqvist, but I think it’s deserved. Not that it’s saying that much, but Holmqvist will surely become a better goaltender than Tommy Salo. He is in my opinion the best Swedish NHL-prospect currently drafted by an NHL-club.

Through the series it became quite clear that MoDo had superior talent on their team, but Brynäs beat them with a big heart and an excellent goaltender. Brynäs are worthy champions.

Xavier was Tampa Bay’s 6th round choice (157th overall) in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. Xavier played for the Adirondack Red Wings in his rookie season and had 10 goals 19 assists for 29 points in 76 games. In Xavier junior career he played for Granby of the QMJHL and helped Granby to the memorial cup championship in 1996, and had 13 goals 27 assists for 40 points in 20 games and was named the QMJHL’s Second Team All-Star and the Memorial Cups All-Star Team in 1996. Xaviers best season in junior hockey came in the 1995-96 season when he scored 45 goals added 75 assists for 120 points.

AJHL Cantel AT&T Cup (April 8th)

Calgary Canucks 4 at St. Albert Saints 3
The Calgary Canucks have emerged as the first-ever victors of the AJHLs brand-new Cantel AT&T Cup.
Despite three straight hard-fought three-goal losses by St. Albert, the Canucks proved to be too strong for the defending AJHL Champions. The Calgary Canucks are now AJHL champs and will go on to play either Kimberly or Vernon in the Doyle Cup (BC-Alberta showdown to decide who advances to the Royal Bank Cup, to be played in Yorkton, Saskatchewan this year).

The Canucks struck early in this game as they so often have as a near-sellout crowd of 910 at Akinsdale Arena in St. Albert were barely filing into their seats Dany Heatley struck 1:27 in. He scored again later in the period with 1:17 left and the Saints were down 2-0 and reeling after one period.

But the Saints did not quit. Rob Ziemmer scored a powerplay goal to bring his club to within one with 16:52 left. Dany Heatley got his hat-trick several minutes later, however, and made the score 3-1 Calgary as fired a close in shot past Saints goaltender and future Wisconsin teammate Scott Kabotoff while on the powerplay. With seven minutes to go in the period, however, Darren Peebles converted a pass from Ziemmer on a two-on-one to bring his club back to within one and that was how they would go to intermission.
