History

2005-06: Junland had incredible development this past season, being the highest scoring defenseman in the Swedish juniors. His numbers, 40 points including 17 goals in 32 games, are quite remarkable for a defenseman. He added about 16 pounds of muscle before this past season and it had a very good affect on his play.

2006-07: Junland played most of his season with SEL finalist Linkopings. He fared well, despite his youth, and enjoyed an excellent playoff run, which saw him net five points in 15 games. He also played briefly with the junior team and in Allsvenskan league in preparation for the World Juniors, a tournament where he was one of Team Sweden’s top players.

2007-08: Junland played in a career-high 52 games for Linkopings HC (SWE) this season. The blueliner recorded three goals and 17 assists, and added another seven points (4g+3a) in 16 postseason games.

2008-09: In his first taste of North American hockey, Junland was a potent offensive defenseman for the AHL's Peoria Rivermen. He scored 13 goals, 18 assists for 31 points in 70 games, earning a spot in the AHL All-Star game. He skated in 5 playoff games with Peoria, scoring 1 assists and 6 PIMs. He also made his NHL debut with St. Louis, but did not score in 1 game.

2009-10: Junland again spent much of the season with Peoria, scoring 14 goals, 30 assists in 74 games. His 44 points led the team's defensemen and his 11 power play goals led the entire team. He played in the AHL All-Star game for the second consecutive year and got a little longer look in St. Louis, appearing in 3 NHL games and notching 2 assists.

2010-11: Junland was tendered a qualifying offer by the Blues in June 2010 but chose to sign a one-year contract with Farjestads BK in Sweden's Elitserien. He scored 5 goals with 17 assists and was +7 with 18 PMs in 41 regular season games. Farjestads finished tied with HV71 and Skelleftea atop the league standings with 96 points and won the playoff title. In 14 playoff games Junland scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was +8 with 12 PMs.
 

Talent Analysis

Junland is a good skater and has fine hands. Hockey sense is good and big strength of his is the way he gets the puck on the target. Junland has a good shot that is very accurate. Looking at the parts of his game that Junland should improve, his defensive awareness could still use some fine tuning. He could also play more determined and more physical at times. Also, sometimes Junland tends to overwork easy situations.

Junland is now playing for Astana Barys in the KHL.

Chris Bogas and Dimitri Yakushin: Sleeper Maple Leafs Prospects

In the late 70′s, singers Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg collaborated on a folksy-rock album called “Twin Sons of Different Mothers”. That title could aptly describe two young, Toronto Maple Leafs defensive prospects, Dimitri Yakushin and Chris Bogas. Bogas is toiling for The Michigan State Wolverines as a senior defenseman and Yakushin is learning his trade as a defenseman for the St. John’s Maple Leafs as a rookie in the AHL.

“The thing that grabs you about Dimitri’s game is his poise for the puck. Rookie defensemen in the AHL often look to give up the puck as soon as they receive it. Dimitri has that confidence that he is going to look for the right play to make. He doesn’t panic with the puck”, states Chris Schwartz, St. John’s director of media relations for the club. “He has some of the same puckhandling moxie of Tomas Kaberle”, Schwartz adds.

“He wants the puck in the tough situations, with the game on the line. His size and toughness are excellent, but his skating and puckhandling sets him apart as well”, says MSU head coach Ron Mason about his senior defenseman, Chris Bogas. “His role has changed a bit over the years at MSU”, he states. “Chris has filled the role of tough-defenseman, adding offense from the blueline and working the special teams as we have needed it. He has filled those roles very well”, Mason adds. “He jumped right into our program as a freshman and hasn’t looked back ever since”.

HF Comments: Big for his age, Kris still has a ways to go with his skating skills.
While his speed isnt bad, he skates with his legs too far apart, which affects his
agility. He has a decent shot, and passes well, but doesnt put up big numbers due
to limited ice time.
Kris’ defense is decent, but he needs to learn to shadow a little
better; he often leaves his man totally alone. Physical game has gotten better as the
season has worn on. He has size, but he doesnt use it to his advantage very often.
Kris needs plenty of ice time to be effective. In games where he gets
this, he plays well. When he doesnt get the ice time, his play suffers, and he
does little but eat up ice time. Also, when he doesnt get his ice time, he doesnt
get “into” the game, and is often a step behind the play. Has come on very well in
the playoffs, and has played a regular shift. He hasnt put up big
numbers, but he has been a physical presence, and shows flashes of
offensive brilliance. Similar to Charlie Stephens, this kid has all the tools, he just lacks polish. I cant wait to see him next
season when he is on a #2 scoring line.

Drafted in the 1st round by the Dallas Stars in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft joined Michigan from the Sault Greyhounds. He was voted by coaches to have the OHL’s hardest shot. He was one goal shy of a club record for defenceman. Was an OHL All star last season. Attended the Stars training camp in September.
Jackman has the distinction of being the Stars most talented prospect and maybe their best trade bait for the future. An offensive minded defenceman, Jackman is learning the craft of playing defence in the IHL and is responding well. An excellent skater who rarely is caught out of position. Also posseses a very hard shot that can find the net. He is still learning at the pro level and is responding well and should be in a Stars uniform in no time.

Islanders Update

Roberto Luongo is once again making a bid to carry his team to the QMJHL Championship. He has won his last six starts and has been stellar, raising his save percentage ten points in this span. Roberto was also recently named the top prospect by The Hockey News.

Other hot Islanders propsects include Jarrett Smith, Adam Edinger, and Bubba Berenzweig. Edinger has had an outstanding season and finished just one point off of the CCHA scoring title. Adam is looking to leadd his Bowling Green team on a deep playoff drive in the coming weeks. Bubba Berenzweig had 8 points in his final eight regular season games and has his sights et on winning another national championship. Jarrett Smith is on a tear with 17 points in his last 11 games. This hot streak has carrired Jarrett to new career highs in goals, assists, and points.

In other news, the Lowell team recently welcomed back two of their best players, Warren Luhning and Ray Giroux. Both players had missed an extended period due to injuries, but have picked up right where they left and playing well.
