History

2008-09: Jonathan Huberdeau played for the Saint-Eustache Vikings Midget AAA team, appearing in 43 games for that team.  He scored 20 goals and added 30 assists for 50 points.  Huberdeau was chosen by the Saint John Sea Dogs in the first round, 18th overall, of the 2009 QMJHL Entry Draft.

2009-10: In his QMJHL rookie season with the Sea Dogs, Huberdeau scored 15 goals and added 20 assists for 35 points in 61 games.  In 21 playoff games for the Sea Dogs, he scored 11 goals and chipped in 7 assists for 18 points.  Huberdeau played for Team Quebec at the World U-17 Hockey Challenge, picking up 2 goals and 1 assist for 3 points in 5 games.

2010-11: Huberdeau played in 67 games for the Sea Dogs, scoring 43 goals and adding 62 assists for 105 points.  His point total was good for third overall in the QMJHL, as were his goal and assist totals.  Huberdeau was named the to the QMJHL First All-Star Team as a left wing.

2011-12: Huberdeau had 72 points in 37 games for  QMJHL champion Saint John, missing nearly two months due to a broken foot and time spent with Team Canada at the 2012 U20 World Junior Championship. He scored 30 goals with 42 assists and was plus-53 with 50 penalty minutes. Huberdeau scored 10 goals with 11 assists and was plus-11 in 15 playoff games. The Sea Dogs reached the Memorial Cup championship game against QMJHL rival Shawinigan and Huberdeau led all scorers at the Memorial Cup with 5 goals and 2 assists in four games.

Talent Analysis

An offensive wizard when the puck is on his stick, Huberdeau is blessed with great hands and the creativity to make things happen on the ice. Equally adept at finding an open player and making a pass as he is with sliding through defensive coverage and scoring a goal himself, he is a dynamic talent with an excellent work ethic. Huberdeau still needs to add muscle to his slight frame but has been working hard in the weight room and will continue to do so.

Future

After another quality year in junior hockey, Huberdeau is poised on the edge of an NHL career. Barring a physical mishap or random chance, Huberdeau will be pulling on a Panthers sweater this fall and for several falls after that. He is all but locked into a roster spot at this point, and should see significant time at even strength and on the power play. Given the necessary ice time and linemates, Huberdeau could challenge for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie.

One year after a surprising trip to the playoffs, the Florida Panthers fell to the bottom of the league standings. For a team in transition such a drop is disheartening. There is a however a silver lining to the Panthers poor season, as the second-overall draft pick in 2013 can yield a potential superstar.

The summer started early for many of Florida's top prospects, after both the Panthers and their AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, failed to make the playoffs. Several of the team's brightest young stars, Jonathan Huberdeau, Drew Shore, Jacob Markstrom, and Alex Petrovic among them, missed out on postseason action. However, the Panthers were still represented in playoff action at many levels of play.

The 2012-13 season marked a pivotal point for numerous prospects in the Florida Panthers system. Seven different players (Jonathan Huberdeau, Drew Shore, Alex Petrovic, Quinton Howden, Nick Bjugstad, Michael Caruso, and Eric Selleck) made their NHL debuts this year. Others, including 2012 first-round pick Mike Matheson, launched their collegiate or professional careers. The players below have all gained recognition for their play, but given the breadth of talent in the system, each of these awards could have been handed out to several different players.
