History

2008-2009 – Breakout A Junior season for Ortio, who joined TPS after moving up from Division I TuTo. Only two goalies played more minutes in the regular season – Lukko’s Antti Raanta and Juha Jarvenpaa of Assat – and he also played well in the playoffs. As the number one goalie for Finland’s Under-18 team in Fargo, he started five of six games – including the shootout win over Canada, 5-4, in the bronze medal game.

He's from the goalie hotbed of Turku.

Talent Analysis

Ortio has shown flashes of being a top flight goalie – both at the A junior level with TPS and playing for the surprising bronze medal-winning Finnish under-18 squad. At 6-1, 181, he has the prototypical size that scouts look for and is capable of making outstanding stops. Perhaps his biggest strength is his level-headedness, and an ability to never get too flustered or frustrated at early struggles. His biggest challenge will be increasing his physical strength, quickness, and lateral movement as he adjusts from junior to professional shooters. Like many Finnish goalies, is strong on breakaways/penalty shots. Still developing his game with regards to positioning and rebound control.

Future

Taken by Swift Current in the Import draft, but Ortio will remain in Finland for 2009-10.
