History

2009-10: Played for Holy Angels Academy in Richfield, Minnesota. In 25 games, he scored 25 goals and added 29 assists for 58 points. In 2 playoff games, he picked up 1 assist.

2010-11: Labate played for Holy Angels, scoring 27 goals and adding 22 assists for 49 points in 25 games. In 1 playoff game, Labate scored 2 goals and added 1 assist for 3 points. Labate also played for Team Southeast in the Upper Midwest Elite League, scoring 2 goals and adding 6 assists for 8 points in 5 games. His time with that team was shortened due to a foot injury. In 3 playoff games, he scored 4 goals and added 2 assists for 6 points. Labate was a finalist for the 2011 Minnesota Mr. Hockey Award.  Labate has committed to the University of Wisconsin.

2011-12: Labate made the jump from Minnesota high school hockey directly to college hockey; skating in 37 games for the Wisconsin Badgers as a freshman. In what was an otherwise disappointing season team-wise, Labate was the Badgers' fifth-leading scorer. He scored 5 goals with 15 assists and was plus-3 with 24 penalty minutes. Wisconsin suffered just its third losing season since coach Mike Eaves took over in 2002-03, finishing tenth in the WCHA.

 

Future

Labate is playing for the University of Wisconsin.

Hockey pundits dubbed the Vancouver Canucks' 2012 NHL Entry Draft selections as "off the board" after their first round selection of Brendan Gaunce. In retrospect, Canucks scouts and management did their utmost to ensure that their later round selections followed several criteria: big, gritty, with a hint of untapped potential.

For the Vancouver Canucks organization, regular season success over the last half-decade has been a dual-edged sword. Winners of multiple President’s Trophies and continually atop the Northwest Division standings, any neutral hockey enthusiast might think it is crazy to label their success a bane. But on two levels, this success has presented challenges that few organizations would covet.

Had the NHL lockout not come to pass, it certainly would have been an interesting training camp in Penticton this season for the Vancouver Canucks. They have graduated a number of players over the past five years, leaving only a couple of select, higher-tier prospects to mature and come of age. With Ryan Kesler and Alex Edler still on the shelf after surgeries, it was shaping up to be an impromptu game of musical chairs to fill the holes left by Kesler’s and Edler’s convalescence.

The Vancouver Canucks organization used the 2012 draft to augment their forward talent levels. Already well-stocked on the back end and between the pipes, forwards with grit and size were added to help balance out the positional depth. With that said, many of the interesting stories shaping up for this season come from players that have already spent time in the team's developmental system.

The Vancouver Canucks' prospect pool may not be considered deep, but the organization has a number of players that project well within the team's puck-possession system. The current roster, laden with veterans drafted by the club, has been carefully chosen out of necessity. The team's regular season success in recent years has forced the organization to pick near the end of each draft round but the system has been improved with shrewd scouting and astute free-agent signings.
