2012-13: Julien Gauthier competed for Laval-Montréal Rousseau Royal of the QMAAA. In 42 games, he scored 12 goals and chipped in 20 assists for 32 points. In 17 playoff games for the Royal, Gauthier scored 3 goals and 8 assists for 11 points as his team went on to win the QMAAA championship. Gauthier was chosen in two drafts, the first being the 2013 USHL Entry Draft where he was chosen in the 22nd round, 322nd overall, by the Omaha Lancers. He was also chosen in the first round, 6th overall, of the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft by the Val d’Or Foreurs.

2013-14: Gauthier competed in his QMJHL rookie season with the Val d’Or Foreurs. In 62 games, he scored 8 goals and chipped in 21 assists for 29 points to go along with a +9 rating. The Foreurs made a run through the QMJHL playoffs (which included winning the league championship) to the Memorial Cup Tournament, with Gauthier picking up 7 assists in 24 postseason games. Gauthier competed for Team Quebec at the 2013 World U17 Hockey Challenge where he went scoreless in 6 games.

2014-15: Gauthier played in his second season with the Val d’Or Foreurs. In 68 games for the Foreurs, he scored 38 goals and added 35 assists for 73 points. The Foreurs made another solid run in the postseason, although they failed to match the previous year’s success. Gauthier scored 5 goals and added 5 assists for 10 points in 17 games.

2015-16: Gauthier competed in his third QMJHL campaign with the Val d’Or Foreurs. Gauthier also competed for Team Canada at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship where he picked up 2 assists in 5 games. Gauthier competed for Team Cherry at the 2016 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game but went scoreless in Team Cherry’s 3-2 loss. Gauthier was ranked fourth among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in their midterm rankings for the 2016 NHL Draft. He was ranked 16th overall by ISS Hockey in their March rankings. Gauthier was chosen in the first round, 21st overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes.

After meeting expectations at last year's IIHF U18 World Championship with solid play and qualifying for the quarterfinals for the first time in two years, Switzerland is looking to have the same success this season and is hoping to finally move up among the top 4 countries.

The 2012-13 season was a landmark year for the QMJHL. Not only did the Halifax Mooseheads follow a record-breaking season by keeping the Memorial Cup in the CHL's eastern-most league for a third straight year, but the Q was also creating plenty of headlines at the NHL Draft with six QMJHL players selected in the first round. Leading the way was Mooseheads Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin who went first and third overall to the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning, respectively.
