History
2003-04: Prior to arriving at Union College, Mrazek played for the Estevan Bruins (SJHL), where he posted a 14-16-4 record with a .903 save percentage.
2004-05: Despite a 5-12-1 record that included one shutout, Mrazek had an impressive showing in his freshman campaign last season. He split time with Kris Mayotte, making 19 appearances. Mrazek finished with a 2.17 goals against average and .912 save percentage. He posted his lone shutout in Union College’s regular season finale versus Princeton that ended in a 0-0 tie.
His best performance came in post-season play where he helped the Dutchmen take Clarkson to three games in the opening round of the ECACHL Playoffs. In the first two games of the series, Mrazek stopped 47 of 49 combined shots to post a loss and win. In the third and deciding game, Mrazek stopped 40 of 44 shots in the heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss.
2006-07 Season: After seeing time in only five games in 2005-06, Justin Mrazek emerged this season as Union College’s undisputed starter in goal. The Regina, SK native proved to be a workhorse and a stabilizing presence for the Dutchmen this season. Mrazek posted a 13-18-3 record that included three shutouts in 34 appearances. While Mrazek’s record may not be all that impressive, his excellent .904 save percentage is.
One of his most memorable outings came back Oct. 6 in the season-opener. In that contest, Mrazek posted a 45-save shutout of Ferris State. The performance also earned him an ECACHL Goaltender of the Week honor.
Talent Analysis
Mrazek is a tall, butterfly style goaltender. He is excellent down low and on his angles. He possesses good reflexes but could use work on improving his lateral movement. Mrazek tends to play deep in his net. He will challenge shooters but could be more aggressive in doing so. Mrazek follows plays well and possesses a very good glove hand as well.
Update: After struggling to get through little playing time in his sophomore season, Mrazek logged a ton of ice time this past season and his game vastly improved in many areas as a result of it. The most notable was his athleticism. He looks more comfortable and quicker in his lateral movements. Mrazek has also made great strides anticipating and reading plays better. He loves to play the puck and can be found making smart plays with it more often than not. He has done a better job of staying with the plays as well as the shooters. The one area that continues to be a weakness for Mrazek is in rebound control. He could also stand to aggressively challenge shooters more often.
Future
Mrazek is in his senior year at Union College in 2007-08.
