2008-09: Returning home to Joensuu did wonders for Oinonen after two forgettable seasons in Helsinki with HIFK. Like one-time Jokerit prospect Joonas Hallikainen, it appeared that Oinonen’s career prospects were severely damaged when he made his SM-Liiga debut as an 18-year old and was blitzed for four goals. Hallikainen suffered a similar fate as a 19-year old, being forced to take over as the starter when Tim Thomas left the SM-Liiga for the NHL the night before the season started. Oinonen led Division I A Junior goalies this season with a 2.51 GAA and also played well in seven games in Mestis.
Oinonen is a highly-skilled but undersized goalie. Signed with HIFK after strong B junior career but after two uneven seasons in Helsinki returned home and enjoyed a resurgence playing for Jokipojat both in A juniors (Division I) and Mestis. Handles puck well and is very athletic – sometimes victimized by better shooters.
