Jyri Marttinen

Prospect Grade: 5.5 D  (About Prospect Grades)

History

An overage draft pick in 2002, the then 20-year-old Marttinen was a project. Much to the credit of then GM Craig Button and his scouting staff, this is one project who has come along nicely.

The no-nonsense puck moving defenseman has developed offensively over the past two seasons in the Finnish Elite League and exhibited a real mean streak in 2003-04, racking up 115 penalty minutes in just 54 games.

Talent Analysis

Marttinen is a simple player who makes a great first pass and takes care of his own end quite well. In many ways a poor man's Tim Ramholt, Jyri also has bona fide mean streak which has added a whole new aspect to his game that wasn't there when the Flames drafted him.
