History

Kevin Nastiuk saw a lot of rubber in 2002-03 as the starting goalie for the woeful Medicine Hat Tigers. While his numbers weren't great, he was often left to hang out to dry by his overwhelmed defense. Behind a much improved Medicine Hat team in 2003-04, Nastiuk won a career-high 40 games, and earned recognition from around the league.

2004-05: Coming off a Memorial Cup appearance with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL last year, he began the 2004-05 season in almost unbelievable fashion, breaking the franchise shutout record just seven games in. From there he continued to accumulate wins and good numbers, and when David Shantz could not attend the Canadian WJC selection camp, Nastiuk got his chance. Overall on the season Nasituk had a 23-18-1 record in 42 appearances. From mid-January on he missed games and his numbers began to drop when he did play, while Matt Keetley has taken over the load of work.

2005-06: Nastiuk has developed well and the Hurricanes signed him for the pro ranks in 2005-06. He struggled with Lowell and had a 1-7-3 record in 11 appearances, along with a 3.45 goals against average and .887 save percentage. In January he was sent to the ECHL’s Florida Everblades and he fared well there in the regular season. The 21-year-old had a 13-4-2 record, 2.52 GAA and .924 save percentage for the ‘Blades. In the playoffs, however, Nastiuk played in just three of the team’s eight games and had one win and one loss in three appearances.

2006-07: This season Nastiuk has spent the entire year in the ECHL with the non-affiliated Las Vegas Wranglers, posting a 15-8-6 record, 2.53 GAA and .915 save percentage. Like former WHL goalie Ward, Nastiuk was expected to be doing more than just playing well in the ECHL at this point, however the Hurricanes pipeline is still crowded and he can still bank all of this experience towards a future NHL career, but needs to make the next step to the AHL soon.

Talent Analysis

The lanky goalie has the frame and athleticism for the position. Nastiuk moves and covers the net well, has good control of rebounds and a tight butterfly.
