2006-07: Had a breakout year as a junior playing on the Wolverines top line. He finished the season ranked third in the nation in scoring and second in team scoring. He was tied for the team lead in goals, was tied for second in team powerplay goals and led all skaters in Ann Arbor in game-winning-goals (4). He was named All-CCHA second team during the regular season and made the CCHA All-Tournament team.

2007-08: Played senior season at the University of Michigan. Took over the as team captain and anchored the Wolverines top line. Emerged as the team's top player and one of the best players in the nation early on. Helped guide the team into the playoffs, only to lose to Notre Dame in the NCAA National Semifinals. Porter finished second in the nation in scoring with 63 points in 43 games. Was the 2008 recipient of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, making him the only the second Wolverine to take home the award since Brendan Morrison did so in 1997. Joined the San Antonio Rampage for their postseason push. Registered four assists in seven games. Finished the postseason tied for second in scoring. In addition to the Hobey Baker Award, he earned American Hockey Coaches Association West All-America first team, College Hockey News Player of the Year and first team All-CHN, Inside College Hockey Player of the Year and first team All-INCH, and 2008 University of Michigan Male Athlete of the Year honors.

Talent Analysis

With a tremendous amount of ability and skill, Porter has continued to transform into on of the top two-way players in the nation. He’s a top-six forward in the collegiate level, who may be able to make an equal transition as a pro. He has good hands, great vision and a great flow to his game. He can find ways to score, but does a better job setting up his linemates. He is a confident player, makes good decisions and has a solid work ethic.

Future

After briefly getting his ears wet in the AHL, expect Porter to challenge for a spot on the Coyotes roster. He may return to San Antonio for the majority of the season, but his long-term value is high.
