Konstantin Volkov

Prospect Grade: 6.0 D  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Originally from St. Petersburg, Volkov joined Dynamo Moscow prior to the 2001-02 season. Had a breakout year on a junior level during the 2002-03 season, leading Dynamo 2 in scoring and being one of the best forwards at the ’86 DOB (date of birth) national championship. Was a late cut for Russia's WJC team in 2003. Transferred to Lada Togliatti in November 2003.

2005-06: Volkov had a mediocre season with the Russian Super League’s Chekhov Vityaz franchise last year, posting only six points in 28 games

2006-07: Volkov played last season as one of the youngest players with Chekhov Vityaz of the Russian League. His teammates included former NHLers Alexander Korolyuk and Oleg Kvasha. In 30 games, Volkov scored seven goals and three assists for 10 points.

Talent Analysis

From affiliate RussianProspects.com: Though often regarded a right wing, Volkov mostly plays center and seems to prefer that position....Good skater, with impressive lateral movement...has a great fake move he uses to get around skaters by moving his upper body in one direction and then suddenly changing stride in a different direction...above average wrist shot...good playmaker, sees the ice very well...not very aggressive...not a physical player, and needs to improve his strength level.

The Leafs European Scout Tommie Bergmann was especially high on Volkov, comparing him to a young Igor Larionov, and considered him to be first round material.

Volkov's rights were recently purchased by the Togliatti hockey club, an excellent program that last year produced Maxim Kondratiev.

Future

Volkov must add weight and strength before he is ready to make the move overseas.
