History

Kyle Lawson was drafted in 2004 by Tri-City in the USHL, but chose to join the NTDP instead. While playing the 2004-05 season on the U-18 squad he put up 23 points (3 goals, 20 assists) in 39 games played.

2006-07: Began college at Notre Dame. Although a freshman, Lawson’s contribution to the Fighting Irish was like that of a more experienced player. He suited up for 38 games and had four goals (two on the power play) and 15 assists. That put Lawson ninth in freshman scoring and second for freshman defensemen in the CCHA. He also represented the U.S. in Sweden and had a better than expected tournament as a teammate of McBain. He was a +1 in seven games for the bronze medal winners.

2007-08: Lawson, like fellow Hurricanes prospect Jamie McBain, has been asked to fill a big role early in his collegiate career. Paired with 2007 first-round pick Ian Cole, Lawson helped lead Notre Dame to a surprising berth in the NCAA title game by knocking off favored Michigan in the Frozen Four semifinals before losing to Boston College. The sophomore finished the season with five goals and 21 assists in 45 games for the Fighting Irish.

Talent Analysis

He's an offensive-minded defenseman that needs more time to develop into the role. He stands up well at the blueline, works hard in the corners and boasts solid all-around play in front of the net.

Future

While slightly undersized, Lawson has displayed some offensive flair from the back end while showing poise beyond his years as one of Notre Dame’s top defensemen. If he continues to develop, the Hurricanes can expect Lawson to become a puck-moving defenseman who won’t be limited by his size.
