History

2008-09: Viedensky proved to be a valuable member of the Prince George Cougars (WHL). The lanky defender put up 40 points in his first season with the Cougars. His plus/minus numbers left something to be desired as he was a -13 on the year. Viedensky was drafted in the 7th round, 189th overall by the San Jose Sharks (NHL).

2009-10: Viedensky’s second season in the WHL was split between the Prince George Cougars (WHL) and the Saskatoon Blades (WHL). The blossoming defender saw improvements in all aspects of his game, improving his point totals to 59 and turning his -13 in 2008-2009 into a +17. Viedensky will play his overage year with the Saskatoon Blades. In the playoffs Viedensky went point-per-game, picking up 10 points in 10 games.

2010-11: Viedensky was the leading scorer for Saskatoon as a 20-year-old as the Blades finished with the WHL's best record. In his first full season with the Blades, he scored 36 goals with 52 assists despite missing nine games throughout the year with nagging injuries and was +60 (second only to defenseman Stefan Elliott's +62 on the Blades). In 10 playoff games Viedensky scored 1 goal with 5 assists and was +1 with 4 PMs. The Blades were swept by eventual WHL champion Kootenay in the second round.

2011-12: In his first season in the AHL, Viedensky didn't follow-up on his excellent final year at the junior level and the big centerman started his year injured while struggling at times to stay in the line-up. He scored five goals along with six assists and a minus five rating in 56 games.

Talent Analysis

Viedensky has a good work ethic, solid defensive play and excels at killing penalties but needs to improve in the offensive zone and drive harder to the net using his big frame to score in the dirty areas of the ice. He has to show more upside to his offensive game in order to make the NHL as a checking role player in the bottom six forwards.

Future

Viedensky will probably be assigned to the AHL with Worcester but could find himself in the ECHL if he doesn't show more improvement in his overall game to start the upcoming season.

Defensemen lead the charge in San Jose Sharks minor league system

The Worcester Sharks and San Francisco Bulls probably did not benefit as a whole due to the lockout as much as other AHL and ECHL organizations, but the individual San Jose Sharks prospects on the teams have made tremendous strides so far in the 2012-13 season. Injuries have slowed down development, but generally the end of 2012 and the start of 2013 has shown great improvement in the Shark’s prospect pool thanks in part to these AHL and ECHL players.

The San Jose Sharks have long believed in the philosophy of taking things slow, and letting young players develop to earn the opportunity to play with the big club. Unfortunately for the Sharks in the last five years, there have not been many opportunities earned.

Tomas Hertl leads San Jose Sharks’ prospects poised for big 2012-13 seasons

The San Jose Sharks finished the 2011-12 season with arguably the worst prospect pool in the entire NHL. This has been a familiar trend within the Sharks organization over the past few seasons as they have looked to contend in the Western Conference and have sacrificed some of their future to do so. Despite the lack of top-tier talent, the Sharks’ prospect pipeline has become something of a well-oiled machine; year after year lesser known, unheralded players go in, and well-developed, NHL-ready talent comes out. The Sharks head into the 2012-13 season with a strong batch of relative unknowns, hoping to silence the critics.

Depth and character prevails in San Jose’s top 20

The San Jose Sharks have seen some of their prospects demonstrate solid development over the 2011-12 season while others have been seemingly stuck in neutral. Benn Ferriero and Justin Braun have graduated since the last Top 20 list while others such as Taylor Doherty, Harri Sateri, Nick Petrecki, and Brandon Mashinter have seen their stock decline over the season. The organization signed several quality free agents this spring including Travis Oleksuk, Matt Tennyson, and Sebastien Stalberg.
