History

Defenseman Mark Flood is a graduate of the Peterborough Petes OHL organization. In his four year stint with the Petes, Flood developed into a mainstay along the blue line, regularly appearing in the top defensive pairing for a Peterborough squad that recorded three winning seasons in Flood’s four-year tenure with the team. The highlight of Flood’s OHL career was his 15-goal, 44-point performance in the 2003-04 season (both career highs), which placed among the top 10 defensemen in scoring on the season.

2005-06: After failing to catch on with the Canadiens, Flood signed with the Blue Jackets after his 2004-05 campaign with the Petes. He has been shuttled around the Columbus farm system this season. His improving performance since the start of the season has led to his selection as an American Conference All-Star to the ECHL All-Star Game on January 25, 2006 in Fresno, California.

2006-07: Early in the season Flood played eight more games for the Crunch and again had a goal and an assist, but the Blue Jackets traded the 22-year-old. Following the trade he was assigned to the Albany River Rats. Flood settled into the AHL nicely and played in 36 games in Albany, scoring three goals and seven assists, with 20 penalty minutes and a -2. Two of his three goals came on the power play.

2007-08: In his first year in the Canes’ system, Flood had his best pro season. In 53 games with Albany, he had 10 goals and 12 assists and just 18 penalty minutes. Unfortunately, a torn labrum abruptly ended Flood’s season in late February, costing him a chance to further impress the Carolina brain trust.

Talent Analysis

Noted for his offensive savvy with the Petes, the Prince Edward Island native has continued to improve his awareness in his rookie campaign in the ECHL. A solid skater, Flood possesses good instincts on the attack, strong slapshot, and sound passing acumen. While he has been knocked in the past for his defensive instincts, he has shown improvement over the season.

Future

Mark Flood’s hockey ceiling appeared to be, at best, a role as a top rearguard in the AHL or a part-time sixth defenseman on an NHL roster. But he has shown flashes of more.
