History

2011-12: Mathieu Joseph appeared in three midget AA games with College Antoine-Girouard’s second team and played for the Richelieu Eclaireurs bantam AA team. He had 1 assist and no penalties in midget AA play.

2012-13: Joseph skated in three regular season games and two playoff contests for the midget AAA College Antoine-Girouard Gaulois, spending most of the year skating for the club’s AA squad. He scored 1 goal with 2 penalty minutes in the regular season and had 1 assist in the playoffs for the Gaulois. Joseph scored 26 goals with 23 assists and 61 penalty minutes in 34 games for the College Antoine-Girouard AA team. He was selected by Saint John in the third round (51st overall) in the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft.

2013-14: Joseph split the season between the QMJHL and midget AAA hockey. He played 30 games with the Saint John Sea Dogs, scoring 1 goal with 10 assists and finishing -3 with 10 penalty minutes. Saint John missed the playoffs, finishing last in the Maritimes Division. Joseph scored 11 goals with 25 assists and 68 penalty minutes in 32 midget games with College Antoine-Girouard.

2014-15: Joseph skated in 59 of 66 regular season games for Saint John in his second season with the Sea Dogs and was the team’s fourth-leading scorer. He scored 21 goals with 21 assists and was +18 with 46 penalty minutes. Saint John finished third in the Maritimes Division, falling to Baie-Comeau in a first-round playoff series. Joseph scored 1 goal with 2 assists and was -2 with 4 penalty minutes in five playoff games. He was ranked 125th amongst North American skaters in the Central Scouting final rankings and was selected by Tampa Bay in the fourth round (120th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Talent Analysis

Joseph is a lanky winger who isn’t afraid to mix it up physically. He has a knack for getting under the opposition’s skin, but don’t discount his offense. The 6’1, 166lb forward recorded 42 points in 59 games in 2014-15 on a Saint John team that was loaded with draft prospects – they had seven in total drafted in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Future

The Sea Dogs are expected to be the team to beat in the QMJHL for the next two or three years and Joseph has a chance to play a major role on the rising team. New head coach Danny Flynn is expected to play his best players a little more this season, whereas last year’s coach Ross Yates rolled four lines, for the most part. Because of that, Joseph should see more ice time in offensive situations, though he’s also fully capable of effectively playing in a bottom-six energy role.

Less than two weeks after his team lost in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman went back to work at maintaining a strong foundation for his team through the draft. With a young roster on the rise that perhaps arrived as a legitimate contender a year early, Yzerman didn’t have any particular needs to fill at the 2015 NHL Draft. Instead, he replenished his team’s system with players of quality character and skill. Read more»
