Undrafted into the OHL, he made the Sting as a walk-on.  There he filled out to 6’2, 192 and developed a nice physical game.  

2007-08: In his second season with the Sarnia Sting (OHL), Martin ranked third on the team in goals (25) and finished with 38 points. He was 3-3-6 over nine games in the playoffs and ended the season second on the team in penalty minutes with 155.

2008-09: In his final season with Sarnia, Martin would achieve his first PPG Season in the OHL. Scoring 35 goals and and 30 assists, the large forward would add 142 penalty minutes.

2009-10: Martinw ould enter his first pro season, with high expectations following his 35 goal season with Sarnia. He would only manage 12 goals and 19 assists with Bridgeport, but would manage 2 assists in 5 games with the Islanders.

With thirteen picks in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft the probability of the New York Islanders selecting a few gems was pretty high. Almost five years removed from this draft, nine of the 13 players selected have played an NHL game.
