History

2013-14: Michael McLeod competed for the Toronto Marlboros Minor Midget AAA club in the GTHL. In 33 games, he scored 21 goals and added 36 assists for 57 points. The Marlboros had a successful postseason, with McLeod playing a big part in that success. In 16 postseason games, he scored 10 goals and added 5 assists for 15 points as the Marlboros went on to win the OHL Cup, with McLeod being named the MVP of the tournament. He was also a recipient of the Buck Houle Award given out by the Marlboros. McLeod was chosen in the first round, 5th overall, of the 2014 OHL Priority Selection by the Mississauga Steelheads.

2014-15: McLeod competed in his OHL rookie season with the Mississauga Steelheads. In 63 games, he scored 12 goals and chipped in 17 assists for 29 points. McLeod competed for Canada Red at the 2014 World U17 Hockey Challenge where he posted an assist in 5 games.

2015-16: McLeod played in his second season with the Mississauga Steelheads. McLeod played for Team Canada at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament where he posted a goal and an assist in 4 games for the gold medalists. McLeod also played for Team OHL in the CHL Canada Russia Series but went pointless in the one game that he played. McLeod competed for Team Cherry at the 2016 BMO CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game where he was named his team’s Player of the Game after a 3-2 loss to Team Orr. McLeod competed for Team Canada at the 2016 U18 World Championship. McLeod was ranked 6th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting in their midterm rankings for the 2016 NHL Draft. He was ranked 7th overall by ISS Hockey in their March rankings. McLeod was chosen in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

A big opening period for Team Canada was all they needed to secure their eighth consecutive gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. The Canadians pumped four goals past Sweden’s starting goaltender, Filip Gustavsson, in the opening frame, then opened that lead up to 6-1 after two periods before winning the 2015 championship game by a 7-3 score.
