History
2008-09: Michael Ferland scored 45 goals with 40 assists and had 52 PMs in 44 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings Midget AAA team. He also skated in one game for the Beasejour Blades in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.
2009-10: Ferland learned from all of his experiences in his rookie season with the Brandon Wheat Kings. The solid winger scored nine goals along with 19 assists and a plus 16 rating while taking 85 PIMs (11 fighting majors) in 61 WHL games. Ferland gained from his rookie season to come back next season better conditioned to play on the top two forward lines for Brandon. The Wheat Kings had a strong playoff push in which Ferland scored three goals with an assist in 15 WHL playoff games. The rookie forward was lucky enough to play for the host team of the 2010 Memorial Cup championships where his team made it past the Calgary Hitmen but lost to the Windsor Spitfires in the finals.
2010-11: Ferland started his second season with the Wheat Kings being forced to undergo knee surgery on October 7, 2010. Ferland's toughness is already well known, but after recovering from the knee injury, he put his skill on display more often in a solid sophomore season. The physical forward scored 23 goals with 33 assists and a plus three rating while accumulating 110 PIMs (12 fighting majors) in 56 WHL games. Ferland showed his value in the playoff series as he tied for the team’s lead with four goals. Despite the series-ending game six loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers, the power forward managed to score a hat-trick. Ferland showed his ability to score the big goals all season long including the playoff-clinching win by scoring in overtime.
2011-12: Ferland was the second-leading scorer for WHL Brandon and signed a three-year-entry level contract with the Flames in December 2011. Trailing only Ottawa prospect Mark Stone, who was the WHL's second-leading scorer with 123 points, Ferland scored 47 goals with 49 assists in his third junior season and was plus-17 with 84 penalty minutes in 68 games. Eighteen of his goals came on the Wheat Kings power play. Brandon finished second in the East Division and reached the second round in the playoffs. Ferland scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was plus-three with 6 penalty minutes in eight playoff games.
Talent Analysis
Ferland plays the power forward role with his puck patience around the net and quick accurate release. The rugged winger can dominate a game with his size or by dropping his gloves when necessary and doesn't shy away from the physical play in both ends of the rink. He will need to continue improving his skating and two-way game to succeed at the professional level.
Future
Ferland will start his professional career at the AHL level in Abbotsford but needs to make the most of his opportunities to stay in the starting line-up. The big winger could find himself spending time in the ECHL if he struggles to adjust to the size and speed or needs to get more playing time this year.
