Michal Jordan

History

2006-07: Michal Jordan played Zlin in the Czech juniors. In 40 games he scored 7 goals with 11 assists and 20 PIM. In six games playing for the Czech Republic at the WJC U-18 tournament, he had one assist.

2007-08: Began the season in the OHL with the Windsor Spitfires before a mid-season trade to the Peter Karmanos-owned Plymouth Whalers (Karmanos owns both the Whalers and the Hurricanes and Carolina has drafted ten Whalers through the years). In 61 regular season games with Windsor and Plymouth, Jordan scored 6 goals with 22 assists and 44 PIM. In four playoff games with Plymouth, Jordan had 3 assists but with a discouraging -9 plus/minus as the Whalers were swept by Kitchener. Jordan also represented the Czech Republic in both the U-18 and U20 WJC tournaments in addition to playing in the OHL. With the U-18 team, he finished with 5 assists in five games while he had 1 assist in six games with the U-20 squad.

2008-09: After attending camp with the Whilaers, Jordan returned to the OHL and was Plymouth’s top scoring defenseman, registering 12 goals and 30 assists and +28 in 58 games. His 42 points ranked tied for 13th among all OHL defensemen. Both Plymouth and Jordan fared better in the playoffs. In eleven games, Jordan had 3 assists with 12 PIM but was a respectable +2 as the Whalers defeated Sarnia in the first round before falling to Memorial Cup-bound Windsor in the second round. Again representing the Czech Republic at the WJC U-20 tournament, he had 1 assist in six games.

2009-10: Suffered an injury during the Traverse City Prospects tournament which caused him to miss some time before returning to Plymouth and also missed time in the middle of the season while captaining the Czech Republic team at the WJC. In 41 regular season games for Plymouth, Jordan scored 13 goals with 19 assists with eleven of those goals coming on the power play. His plus/minus of +1 was well-below his figure from 2008-09. In nine OHL playoff games, he had 5 assists with 8 PIM and was +1. Jordan signed an entry level contract with Carolina in April and was with Albany during the AHL playoffs but did not play in any games. With the Czech Republic, he played in all six games at the WJC with 1 assist.

2010-11: Jordan competed for Hurricanes' AHL affiliate Charlotte as a 20-year-old in his first season of pro hockey. In 67 games, he scored 4 goals with 14 assists and had 35 PMs. Jordan's +15 plus/minus was the second-best on the Checkers behind veteran forward Jacob Mickflikier. In 16 OHL playoff games, Jordan had 2 assists and was -3.

2011-12: Jordan was one of two players to skate in all 76 games for Carolina AHL affiliate Charlotte in his second pro season. Though focused on the defensive aspects of the game he was second amongst Checkers defensemen with 22 points; scoring 4 goals with 18 assists and was minus-15 with 43 penalty minutes. Charlotte finished third in the Midwest Division; one point out of an AHL playoff spot.

 

Talent Analysis

Jordan is the prototypical puck-moving defenseman who thrives in power play situations. Jordan is reliable in his own end though he does not play a particularly physical game. Jordan is a leader on his team and has a good feel for the game.

 

Future

Jordan will likely start the season with Charlotte in the AHL. He has decent size and the potential to be a solid two-way defenseman down the road but like many young prospects must first develop the other areas of his game to compliment his offensive instincts and scoring skills.
