Mika Jarvinen

History

2008-2009 – Jarvinen developed into a consistent SM-Liiga goalie in his second full season – teaming with Mika Ohka to lead a much-improved KalPa team to a 6th place finish. Jarvinen’s size and youthful enthusiasm will be his greatest challenges, but he has begun to develop consistency in his game to go along with considerable athletic ability and goaltending skills.

Talent Analysis

The 20-year-old, one-time HPK junior is the most advanced of the Finnish goaltending prospects – having finished his second full season with KalPa in the SM-Liiga where he shares goaltending duties with veteran Mika Ohka. Jarvinen, who plays with a great deal of energy yet shows great poise for a young goalie, showed marked improvement in his second year. He is solid technically with his lone “weakness” being his size – 5’9” – which sometimes provides space for shooters when he is down in the butterfly or protecting the ice. Also has the ability to stickhandle and move the puck to his teammates to start the transition. Is only goalie to ever score a goal in SM-Liiga play. With the wealth of goaltending talent available, it is a bit of a long-shot that a team would take a shot on a goalie of his size. But for a franchise starved for goaltending talent, he is definitely worth consideration.
