History

2002-03: Vannelli played for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the USHL. He led all USHL defensemen in scoring and was a member of the All-USHL First Team in 2002-03.

2003-04: Vannelli followed in his father’s footsteps to the University of Minnesota.

4th round, 136th overall, 2003 Entry Draft by the Thrashers.

2005-06: He is a fixture on the power play. His game has been coming on lately this season and he’s getting plenty of ice time for Minnesota, paired with Derek Peltier (COL), his partner since last year.

Did not come to terms with the Thrashers in 2007, becoming a free agent.

Turned pro in 2007-08 signing with the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms, assigned to the ECHL Wheeling Nailers, then retired after two games.

Talent Analysis

Vannelli has an offensive upside, is a quick skater and good passer. He has soft hands and sees the ice well. Waddell on Vannelli at the time of the draft: “Not overly skilled but good vision. Good feel for the game.”

In college, Vannelli played the penalty kill equally well as the power play. Sufficiently physical, he is able to eliminate the opposition cleanly.

Does not excel in any one area.
