History

2007-08: Nick D’Agostino posted respectable numbers for St. Michaels of the OPJHL where he finished 13th on his team in scoring and appeared in 46 games. The 6’3 defenseman played on the power play, penalty kill, and in five-on-five situations for St. Michaels of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League.

2008-09: In his final season of OJHL play, he played in all situations, in the process managing 9 goals, 24 assists, and 34 penalty minutes in 43 games.

2009-10: As a freshman with Cornell, D'Agostino posted 4 goals and 14 assissts in 32 games, playing mostly as a 4th or 5th defenseman.

2010-11: D'Agostino saw his ice time climb in his sophomore season as well as a byproduct his statistics. He was more active in the offensive zone, and manned the point at times on the powerplay. In 32 games he managed 7 goals and 10 assists.

2011-12: D'Agostino was the leading scorer amongst defensemen for Cornell in his junior season; due largely to his success on the Big Red power play. Playing in 34 of 35 games, he scored 8 goals (six on the power play) and had 12 assists and was plus-two with 24 penalty minutes. Cornell finished second in ECAC Hockey and won the third-place game against Colgate in the league tournament. The Big Red defeated Michigan in overtime in the NCAA Midwest Regional before falling to national runner-up Ferris State.

 

Talent Analysis

D’Agostino is a puck-moving defenseman with a long reach and accurate poke-check.  The left-handed defender has a hard slap shot that consistently makes contact with the net. His defensive positioning is sound and he is an active defender that is good at picking angles and removing passing lanes.

He is considered a very cerebral player who should develop into a solid two-way defenseman.

D'Agostino will play his senior season at Cornell.

With a front office and coaching staff made up almost entirely of former NCAA hockey players, it should come as no surprise that the Pittsburgh Penguins love to draft and develop collegiate level talent. However, there are also pragmatic reasons as to why Penguins draft collegiate bound players. The biggest reason is because NHL teams are afforded two more years with NCAA players before they have to make a decision regarding whether or not they will sign the player to an entry-level contract. That extra development time is crucial for a team like the Penguins, who rely heavily on mid-to-late round draft picks to keep their cupboard stocked.

With the NHL salary cap scheduled to go down by almost 6 million dollars in the 2013-14 season, the Pittsburgh Penguins appear to have positioned themselves well for the short and long-term future. Many of their top prospects are either playing in the NHL or knocking on the door, and given the typically affordable salaries young players make, the organization should have plenty of room to retain several star players who will be up for contract in the coming years.

For as significant as the 2007-08 season was in Pittsburgh Penguins' history, the 2008 draft was fairly forgettable. The organization traded their first three picks in the 2008 draft in three separate trades. All three trades were vital in equipping the Penguins for back-to-back runs to the Stanley Cup Finals, but the most significant was the one which sent their 2008 first round pick, prospect Angelo Esposito, and forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen to the Atlanta Thrashers for Marian Hossa and Pascal Dupuis.
