History
Babin was signed to a two-year pro contract on Mar. 26, 2007 on the heels of Notre Dame’s elimination from NCAA Tournament quarter finals.
Carolina stumbled upon Babin in 2006-07 when checking out his teammate, draft pick Kyle Lawson, at Notre Dame. After being signed and joining Albany, it looked like Babin could be real promising. But a first full pro season riddled with struggles and injuries have left Babin’s future up in the air.
2006-07: Babin capped an outstanding collegiate career at Notre Dame by establishing himself as one of the most reliable and consistent blueliners in the CCHA. The Palm Beach Gardens, FLA native led all Notre Dame defensemen in scoring with 22 points (two goals, 20 assists) playing in all 42 contests this season. Babin was named as an honorable mention to the All-CCHA Team and was the recipient of the team’s William Donald Nyrop Award, as the top defensive player of the year.
2007-08: Carolina figured they had found a diamond in the rough when Babin joined Albany at the end of 2006-07, registering seven points in 11 games. But Babin’s first pro season did not build on his brilliance of the previous year. He struggled early in the season - even playing some forward with the hopes he would regain his confidence — and then suffered a concussion that derailed his year right when he seemed to be regaining his form. In the end, Babin finished the year with four assists in 46 games.
Talent Analysis
Babin is a mobile, offensive-minded defenseman. He is an agile skater with nice, smooth strides. His speed allows him to stay up with most opposing forwards. Babin possesses excellent puck skills, demonstrating both poise and patience in both carrying and distributing it. While Babin is not shy about jumping up to join the play, it almost never comes at the expense of his defensive responsibilities. He is a very smart, instinctive player who has a great sense of anticipation and awareness. Babin has superb on-ice vision and has a knack for finding the open spaces. He possesses a very good shot and has little trouble getting pucks to the net. Babin is not an overly physical play but will play the body when necessary.
Future
Babin needs to play himself out of the ECHL before anything more can be projected.
