Talent Analysis

Klefbom is a raw, tantalizing talent. He has great size for a rearguard, is an excellent skater, and has tremendous natural offensive instincts. This combination of size, speed, and skill had scouts salivating over him in the 2011 draft. He has work to do on his positioning, his defensive play, and generally on the finer aspects of the game and will be given every opportunity to develop those abilities. He has proven capable of handling large amounts of ice time in his first full NHL season.

Future

Klefbom made the Oilers out of training camp to start the 2014-15 season. After seeing limited ice time early in the year — briefly spending time with AHL affiliate Oklahoma City — and suffering a foot injury that kept him out for two games, he has been an impact presence in the Oilers' lineup over the second half. Klefbom's combination of skill, size and skating ability fits in well with the talented young forwards in Edmonton, though his defensive positional play is still a work in progress. That should improve as he develops and gains experience.
