History
Coulombe played four full seasons with the Rimouski Oceanic before being traded to Chicoutimi Sagueneens in his final junior season midway through the year. Coulombe showed progressive and steady improvement throughout each of his seasons in the Q. From 2003-05, he played a significant amount of time on the power play with now NHL superstar Sidney Crosby. Coulombe did prove in his overage season in junior that his numbers weren’t purely as a result of Crosby’s presence, however, scoring career-highs in goals (23) and points (77). Coulombe was invited to the Canucks’ Rookie Camp in 2006 and ultimately earned a spot on the team’s AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose. Despite his early season success, Coulombe bounced around a lot this year, playing 44 AHL games, six in the ECHL and seven contests with the Canucks.
Talent Analysis
Coulombe is all offense. He moves well on the ice and is very talented with the puck. He stick handles very well and he does an even better job at finding the open man on the breakout or on the rush. He has a respectable shot that is fairly accurate. He was a dynamic offensive player in junior and should develop into a good offensive defender at the professional level, although if that’s the AHL or NHL is still to be determined. Defensively he is at a disadvantage because of his very small stature, even for the so-called “new NHL.” He’s physically weak but he does try very hard in his own zone and doesn’t make too bad of reads. With Coulombe his defensive inadequacies are largely related to his lack of size and strength and there is only so much he can do about that.
Future
It will be difficult for Coulombe to forge himself a full-time role in the NHL because of his stature. He is a very talented, hard-working player who does everything he can to overcome his lack of size, but his work effort will likely only carry him so far. Coulombe has the potential to be a power-play specialist in the NHL.
