History

2008-09: Phillip Danault was chosen in the first round, 9th overall, of the 2009 QMJHL Entry Draft by the Victoriaville Tigres.

2009-10: In his QMJHL rookie season, Danault played in 61 games for the Tigres. He scored 10 goals and added 18 assists for 28 points. In 16 playoff games, Danault picked up 1 assist. Danault played for Team Quebec at the 2010 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, picking up 3 assists in 5 games.

2010-11: In 64 games for the Tigres, Danault scored 23 goals and added 44 assists for 67 points. In 9 playoff games for the Tigres, Danault scored 5 goals and added 10 assists for 15 points. Danault played for Team Cherry at the 2011 CHL Home Hardware Top Prospects Game.

2011-12: Danault made his pro hockey debut – appearing in seven games for AHL Rockford – after skating in 62 games for Victoriaville in his third season in the QMJHL. Danault had 2 assists and was minus-five with 10 penalty minutes in his end of the year stint with the Ice Hogs (Rockford did not make the AHL playoffs). He scored 18 goals and was second on the Tigres with 53 assists while finishing plus-11 with 61 penalty minutes in QMJHL play. Victoriaville finished second in the East Division behind eventual Memorial Cup champion Shawinigan but was swept in a first round playoff series with Baie-Comeau. Danault had 3 assists and was minus-one with 4 penalty minutes in four playoff games.

Talent Analysis

Named team captain as a 17-year-old, that fact alone speaks to the quality of character of Danault. A leader both on and off the ice, Danault's effort level can never by questioned. Whether it's scoring a goal, finishing a check, or killing a penalty, he plays an all-weather, two-way game. He has also developed into a dynamic skater capable of making plays at high speed on the rush. Though he might not be naturally skilled enough to be a scoring forward at the next level, his work ethic and skating ability should guarantee a future in the NHL.

Future

Danault could push for a roster spot in Chicago at training camp, but he is most likely destined for a final year of junior hockey in the QMJHL with Victoriaville for the 2012-13 season. He is not far off from playing a top-nine role at the NHL level.

While there are no plans for the Chicago Blackhawks to take the ice in the forseeable future, many of the team's top prospects will still be playing with the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL as well as in junior, college, and European leagues around the world. Several prospects will transition to new levels of play while others will look to gain a foothold among the competition in the Chicago system. Below are a few of the interesting storylines headed into the 2012-13 season.

Three of the Blackhawks' new additions from the 2012 NHL Draft make their debut in the new edition of the team's top 20 rankings, but the most significant storylines heading into the season belong to the prospects playing at the pro level. The NHL work stoppage will lead to a bevy of talent in the Rockford IceHogs lineup, including players like Nick Leddy, Marcus Kruger, and Brandon Saad who would have had a good chance of breaking camp with a spot in the Blackhawks lineup.

Ever since the 2012 Memorial Cup host was named last season, the Saint John Sea Dogs and the Shawinigan Cataractes have been on a collision course. Both teams had put forth bids to host the CHL championships when the event rotated into the QMJHL. Most felt that Saint John, having the best regular season record for two seasons in a row at the time and on their way to win the QMJHL championship and the 2011 Memorial Cup, would be named the host for the 2012 Memorial Cup, but it was Shawinigan's bid that ended up winning the day.
