Radoslav Illo was born in Slovakia. Before coming to the States, he played well in the Slovakian U-18 league, putting up impressive numbers.

2008-09: In his rookie season at the age of 18, Illo finished second on the USHL Tri-City Storm in points with 21 goals and another 12 assists. Illo accomplished all of this though while only playing 47 games.

2009-10: Illo scored almost a point a game for Tri-City, posting 24 goals and 19 points in 50 games. Also registered 11 powerplay goals and 56 PIM. Named to the 2010 USHL All-Star Game. Played for Slovakia in the 2010 WJCs where he posted 2 goals and 3 assists in 6 games.

2010-11: Illo skated in 37 of 38 games for Bemidji State. He was second amongst Beavers freshmen with 4 goals and 2 assists and was +3 with 20 PMs. Bemidji State finished 10th in the 12-team WCHA but made a surprise run to the conference semifinals by defeating eventual national champion Minnesota-Duluth in overtime (3-2).

2011-12: Illo skated in 30 of 38 games for Bemidji State as a sophomore – missing eight games after suffering an injury in a February game against Nebraska-Omaha. He scored 7 goals with 10 assists and was minus-eight with 21 penalty minutes. Three of his seven goals were scored on the power play. The Beavers finished ninth in the WCHA.

2012-13: Illo played in 34 of 36 games for Bemidji State in his junior season. Playing mostly a second and third line role for the Beavers, he scored 4 goals with 10 assists and was -5 with 16 penalty minutes. Bemidji State won just six games and finished 11th in the 12-team WCHA; falling to Minnesota in a first round playoff series.

2013-14: Illo made his debut in North American pro hockey in April — signing an AHL amateur tryout contract with Ducks AHL affiliate Norfolk following his senior season at Bemidji State. He had no points and was -3 with 2 penalty minutes in three regular season games and had 2 penalty minutes with no points in his only playoff game. Illo scored 10 goals with 7 assists in 31 games for Bemidji State. The Beavers finished tied for eighth with Lake Superior State in the re-aligned WCHA; earning a playoff berth based on tie-breaking criteria. The Beavers were swept by first-place Ferris State in the WCHA quarterfinals. Illo was not signed to an entry level contract by the Ducks by August 2014 — becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Talent Analysis

Illo was drafted in 2009 for his potential as a goal scorer in junior hockey where he displayed a quick release, accurate shot, and the ability to find quiet ice to launch shots. He scored 10 goals in 31 games in his final season of college hockey in 2014-15 but the supplementary areas of his game have not yet developed as expected.

Illo returned to Slovakia after not receiving an NHL contract and is skating for MHC Martin in 2014-15. In his first season of pro hockey the 25-year-old has been solid in a two-way role for the club — which is a middle-of-the-pack team in the Slovak Extraliga. As with many late round picks, regardless of the venue, Illo would likely have been a project from both a physical standpoint and a skill standpoint and he is likely to play out his career in Europe.
