2007-08: Ryan Carpenter played for the Victory Honda U16 team in Michigan. In 31 games he scored 15 goals with 14 assists and 26 penalty minutes. Carpenter was selected by Sioux City in the ninth round (77th overall) of the 2008 USHL Futures Draft.
2008-09: Carpenter skated for the Honeybaked midget major AAA team in Michigan and was the team's third-leading scorer. He scored 19 goals with 13 assists and 26 penalty minutes in 46 games. Honeybaked finished first in the Detroit Division.
2009-10: Carpenter played in 58 of 60 games for the Sioux City Musketeers in his first USHL season. He scored 10 goals with 12 assists and was -9 with 45 penalty minutes. Sioux City finished fifth in the West Division; one point behind the Tri-City Storm for the final playoff spot. In June 2010 Carpenter committed to playing college hockey at Bowling Green in 2011-12.
2010-11: Named a team captain in his second season with Sioux City, Carpenter was the second-leading scorer for the Musketeers. He scored 13 goals and led Sioux City with 32 assists, finishing +3 with 30 penalty minutes, in 59 regular season games. The Musketeers reached the expanded USHL playoffs after finishing sixth in the West Division. Carpenter scored 2 goals with 1 assist and was +1 with 2 penalty minutes in the three-game series with Sioux Falls.
2011-12: Carpenter was one of four players to skate in all 44 games for Bowling Green in his freshman season and was the Falcons' leading scorer. He scored 11 goals with a team-leading 19 assists and was +4 with 31 penalty minutes. Bowling Green reached the CCHA semifinals, falling to Michigan in double overtime, after finishing last in the CCHA during the regular season.
2012-13: Carpenter was named team captain as a sophomore and was Bowling Green's leading scorer for the second straight season. He scored 18 goals with 15 assists and was +12 with 20 penalty minutes. Bowling Green finished ninth in the CCHA in the regular season. The Falcons defeated Lake Superior State in the first round before falling to Notre Dame in two one-goal games in the CCHA quarterfinals.
2013-14: Carpenter made his pro hockey debut with Sharks' AHL affiliate Worcester following an injury-filled junior season at Bowling Green. In his first seven AHL games with Worcester he had 2 assists and was -1 with 4 penalty minutes. A broken finger kept him out of the first ten games of the season for Bowling Green and he later suffered a broken foot. In 15 college games he scored 8 goals with 8 assists and was +3 with no penalties. San Jose signed Carpenter to an entry-level contract on March 26th, 2014.
