History
2008-09: Murphy played for the York Simcoe Express AAA team where he scored 30 goals and 65 assists for 95 points in 34 games. Murphy was the Kitchener Rangers top pick in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection and third overall in that draft.
2009-10: Murphy played his OHL rookie season for the Kitchener Rangers. In 62 games, he scored 6 goals and added 33 assists for 39 points. In 20 playoff games, he scored 5 goals and chipped in 12 assists for 17 points. Murphy was named to the OHL's First-Team All Rookie Team for the season. Murphy played for the silver medal-winning Team Ontario squad at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, where he scored 1 goal and 3 assists for 4 points in 6 games.
2010-11: Murphy played his second season with the Rangers, playing in 63 games for that club. He scored 26 goals and added 53 assists for 79 points. In 7 playoff games for the Rangers, Murphy scored 2 goals and added 9 assists for 11 points. Murphy played for Team Cherry at the 2011 CHL Home Hardware Top Prospects Game where he was named Player of the Game for Team Cherry in their 7-1 loss to Team Orr.
