Talent Analysis
Brittain is the prototypical modern NHL goaltender with good size and a traditional butterfly style. He uses his size to cover the net and is adept at controlling rebounds. He is comfortable and calm in his crease and relies on sound positioning and fluid movements instead of the twisting, acrobatic saves that can be seen in others. He has a quick, technically solid catching glove, and moves smoothly from post to post.
Future
Brittain’s future short-term will be dictated by his recovery from off-season knee surgery to correct damage suffered in the WCHA Final Five game against North Dakota. Thus far, the knee is recovering well, and he could return to at least limited duty before the end of the year. He and the Denver staff will be certain to make sure he is fully healed before he plays. Brittain will play out his full eligibility in Denver, and then embark on the long development that is professional goaltending. He projects as a potential NHL starter, or above average backup, but his recover from surgery and future development is crucial to reaching that potential.
