History

2010-11: Sean Monahan was selected by the Ottawa 67's in the first round (16th overall) of the 2010 OHL Priority Draft after playing for the Mississauga Rebels midget team in the OHL Cup. He played 62 games for Ottawa in his first OHL season and represented Canada Ontario in the 2010 U17 World Hockey Challenge. Playing on 67's team that won the East Division but was upset in the first round of the OHL playoffs, he scored 20 goals with 27 assists and was plus-24 with 32 penalty minutes. In the four-game first-round series with Sudbury he scored 2 goals with 2 assists and was minus-one. Monahan scored 3 goals with 2 assists for tournament champion Canada Ontario at the WHC.

2011-12: Monahan had a successful second season playing for an Ottawa 67's team that featured NHL prospects Tyler Toffoli (LAK), Shane Prince (OTT), and defenseman Cody Ceci (OTT). He was the 67's third-leading scorer behind Toffoli and Prince with 33 goals and 45 assists and was plus-25 with 38 penalty minutes in 62 regular season games. Ottawa won the East Division for the second straight season and reached the conference finals in the playoffs. Monahan scored 8 goals with 7 assists and was minus-six with 12 penalty minutes in 18 playoff games.

2012-13: Monahan assumed the captain's role for Ottawa in his third season. With several veterans gone, the 67's slid to the bottom of the OHL, winning just 16 games in and finishing last in the East Division. Monahan led Ottawa with 78 points; scoring 31 goals and 47 assists in 58 games and had 24 penalty minutes. He was a minus-18 plus/minus on a team that allowed 115 more goals than it scored. Monahan was invited to Canada's U20 camp for the 2013 World Junior Championship but was not part of the final roster. He was ranked fourth amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting's mid-term rankings prior to the 2013 NHL Draft and played in the CHL Top Prospects game. Monahan is ranked fifth overall in the CSS final 2013 rankings.

Talent Analysis

Monahan isn’t the elite offensive talent that others in this list may be, but he most certainly has one of the most refined two-way games. Monahan combines that two-way talent with strong leadership qualities. In many ways, he’s akin to Gabriel Landeskog. He will not dominate a game in any flashy way, but will control it behind the scenes and very quickly assume a leadership role on any of the teams that draft him.

Monahan has good size (6’2) and plays a key position (centre), so he’ll be in demand. As a late 94, he’s had an extra year of development and may be more NHL-ready quicker than some of his compatriots.

Future

Monahan officially made the Flames for the 2013-14 after displaying impressive skills and looking comfortable on the NHL ice. Monahan and his smart play has led him to make the most of opportunities to generate scoring chances. The Brampton native also has the special opportunity to be one of the leaders on Team Canada for the 2013-14 WJC, should he be available to play. Monahan is a special talent and has the potential to become a captain and an all-star for the Calgary Flames.

The February edition of International Scouting Service's ranking of the top 30 prospects for the 2013 NHL Draft shows some re-arrangement at the top of the rankings but slightly less volatility among the prospects outside the top 10.

If the Canadian Hockey League considers itself the best road to the NHL, then the Ontario Hockey League can lay claim to being the CHL’s most popular route. Having provided five of the last six first-overall draft picks, it’s likely that players coming out of the OHL will have their names called early and often at the 2013 NHL Draft that will take place in Newark, NJ in late June.

Although a NHL Draft prospect's standing isn't ultimately decided by performances in one game or at one event, certain games and events can provide a sudden jolt to a player's rating in either a positive or negative manner.
