After returning home with a silver medal last year, Team Russia will make another strong push at a medal this year in Helsinki, Finland at the 2016 World Junior Championship. Head Coach Valeri Bragin will have only three returnees from last year’s tournament, but the Russians are nevertheless expected to be in the group of gold medal contenders, especially due to excellent goaltending options and great offensive depth. Out of the Colorado Avalanche’s nine prospects playing junior hockey, five play in the QMJHL and all were drafted in the last two years.
For the first time in team history, the Avalanche left an entry draft without selecting any players from the WHL or OHL. Head coach Patrick Roy’s emphasis on targeting players from Europe and Quebec is a complete reversal from the previous regime’s preference and is just one of many philosophical differences in how he wants to run the organization with General Manager Joe Sakic.

While it was a case of too little, too late for Team Russia, they did manage to notch their first win of the 2015 CHL Canada Russia Series with a 3-2 victory over Team QMJHL on Tuesday night at Iamgold Arena in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. Read more»
