2003-04: Stanislav Balan made his Czech Extraliga debut, skating in four games with HC Zlin and was the leading scorer for HC Zlin's U20 squad. He also skated for the Czech Republic at the 2004 U18 World Junior Championship. He had 1 goal with 2 PMs in four games for HC Zlin and scored 23 goals with 33 assists and 120 PMs in 53 games for the U20 squad. In seven games at the junior championship he had 2 assists. Balan was selected by Nashville in the seventh round (209th overall) of the 2004 NHL Draft.
2004-05: Balan appeared ready to crack the HC Zlin lineup as an 18-year-old before several veteran players joined the club following the NHL lockout. He played five games for Hodonin in the Czech third league, scoring 3 goals with 2 assists and 20 PMs. Balan was HC Zlin U20's second-leading scorer with 10 goals and 13 assists in 37 games and led the team with 131 PMs. In two playoff games he was scoreless with 2 PMs. Balan was selected by the Portland Winterhawks in the second round (60th overall) of the CHL Import Draft.
2005-06: Balan had an inconsistent first season in North America playing for the WHL's Portland Winterhawks. He scored 14 goals with 23 assists and was -12 with 102 PMs. In 12 playoff games he scored 1 goal with 4 assists and was -8 with 18 PMs.
2006-07: Balan returned to HC Zlin; entering his first full season in the Czech Extraliga as a 20-year-old. In a lower line role, he scored 4 goals with 3 assists and had 48 PMs in 44 games. He had no points with 2 PMs in five playoff games. Balan was loaned to second division Trebic for seven games and scored 3 goals with 2 assists and 12 PMs.
2007-08: Balan skated in 57 games for HC Zlin in his second season, scoring 4 goals with 6 assists and 10 PMs. HC Zlin finished 13th in the 14-team league.
2008-09: Balan played 46 games for HC Zlin as the club moved up to fifth place in his third season. In 46 games during the season he scored 5 goals with 3 assists. He played in four of five playoff games and was scoreless with no penalties. Balan played in five games for Dukla Jihlavs in the Czech second league and scored 4 goals with 3 assists and 4 PMs.
2009-10: Balan appeared in all 52 games for HC Zlin as the club finished second in the Czech Extraliga. HIs 85 penalty minutes were second-most on the team and he chipped in offensively with 5 goals and 11 assists. Balan had 2 assists with 4 PMs in six games in HC Zlin's first round playoff series.
2010-11: Balen scored a career-high 8 goals with 8 assists in 50 games while drastically reducing his penalty minutes (30) in his fifth season with Zlin. Zlin finished fourth in the regular season again but were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight year. Balan had 3 assists in four playoff games for HC Zlin.
Balan is a good skater for a player of his size. He takes advantage of his fluid stride and possesses solid agility. He has an adequate first-step quickness and is able to execute at a high velocity. Balan is a tremendous puckhandler who sees the ice well. He is a deft playmaker who utilizes on his strong hand-eye coordination. Balan has above-average hockey sense and plays well in position. He is capable of finshing the scoring chances, too, as he boasts a good wrist shot with a fast release. His slap shot could see some improvement in accuracy and hardness. Balan doesn't refuse to help out the defense thanks to his solid defensive awareness, but still could block the opposing passing lanes more effectively. At 6'1, 163 lbs. Balan has a very skinny frame at this point. He doesn't play a physical style and relies on his finesse more than on his toughness.
