History

2006-07: After being selected first overall in the OHL Priority Draft in 2006, Steven Stamkos had a tremendous rookie OHL season for the Sarnia Sting. His 92 points ranked third among OHL rookies, and he was named runner-up OHL Rookie of the Year. Stamkos was also named OHL Scholastic Player of the Year for the 2006-07 season. He also played in the U18 WJCs in Finland and tallied 10 points in six games.

2007-08: Stamkos continued his excellent offensive production during the 2007-08 season. He led Sarnia in total points, was fifth in the league with 105 points, and ranked second in the OHL with 58 goals in 61 games. Additionally, he was named to the U20 Canadian WJC team, where he recorded six points in 7 games.

 

Talent Analysis

A franchise player, he is an excellent skater, and a top puck handler with a great release on his shot.

With the number one overall pick going into the 2008 NHL draft, the Tampa Bay Lightning were expected to select at least one successful NHL player. This was certainly the case, as Steven Stamkos, widely touted to be one of the best prospects in the world for quite some time prior to the draft, turned out to be a top-notch sniper at the NHL level.
