History

2010-11: In his freshmen year, T.J. Tynan scored 54 points in 44 games. He put his passing in display with 31 assists and showed he could finish as well with 23 goals playing with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In June’s draft, the Blue Jackets selected him with the 67th overall pick in the third round.

2011-12: His sophomore was solid as he set up 28 goals and scored another 13 in 39 games with the Irish. He had the honor of playing for his first US National team (USA U20) in the World Junior Championships U20. He scored four points in six games in the international tournament, his totals favoring assists once again.

 

Talent Analysis

Tynan is a very good playmaking forward and his passing ability has no ceiling, but at 5’8, Tynan needs to bulk up significantly otherwise professional hockey will eat him alive. There are so many NCAA super stars who are too small to make it in the NHL and Tynan could be another of those products. The new NHL leaves the opportunity for younger plays to excel on their positioning and Tynan has developed a good understanding of the game.

 

Future

Tynan will finish out his two final seasons in Notre Dame, he’s on pace to finish with over 115 career assists, and will get a chance in the AHL where he will sink or swim.

Talent and depth on defense is the backbone of Columbus Blue Jackets Top 20 ranking

The Columbus Blue Jackets still have strong defensive depth and a good amount of young wingers slowly reaching their potential. Unfortunately for Columbus not all of these wingers can be Cam Atkinson or Boone Jenner. Much like the deep defensive core, the Blue Jackets are riddled with gritty forwards that get in the dirty areas, but have trouble finding the back of the net. Although the Blue Jackets have a significant amount of household names, the back-end prospects in the talent pool are not improving nearly as much as they should.

The Columbus Blue Jackets had top five picks in two of the last three NHL drafts. As a result there system has a good amount of quality prospects that should be seeing formidable playing time in the future.
