History
Brennan has come out of nowhere. In 2005-06 he played for the relatively obscure Junior Elite Philadelphia Little Flyers after playing for years at the AA level. He was offered numerous lacrosse scholarships and could have played hockey at any number of those schools but chose to play hockey at the best level possible. His determination led him to a two-week tryout with the St.John's Fog Devils of the QMJHL where he made the team. His 41 points in 68 games won the Raymond-Legace Trophy as the QMJHL's Top Rookie Defenseman in the 2006-07 season. Brennan didn't start playing hockey until he was 10.
Talent Analysis
A player in the Mathieu Schneider, Bryan McCabe mold in junior, Brennan's offensive game doesn't prevent him from throwing his weight around. An elite lacrosse player, Brennan brings quick hands and a very physical game to the ice. By his own admission he needs to work on his stride and his explosiveness for the next level. He also needs more work in the defensive zone, something that requires more experience than the offensive game. While Brennan admits to needing defensive work – especially on his angles, he has come so far in such a short time that those aspects of the game will come with good coaching and with time. He’s mature enough to know he still has lots of work to do. Brennan has a pro wrist shot right now and his slap shot has been clocked at 97 mph. Mentally, Brennan’s focus and commitment are there. He’s mature off the ice and is very coachable.
Future
Brennan needs at least two more years of hockey before he can make the jump to the NHL. Having played only one year of junior hockey, Brennan will definitely be back with the Fog Devils for at least one season and likely more. Brennan has come a long way very quickly and will need lots of time to settle into the pro game, especially playing defense.
