History

The hulking defenseman had two full seasons in the USHL under his belt before moving to the college ranks. In his two USHL seasons, he compiled only 21 points in 102 games. It is safe to say he is by no means an offensive blueliner. Before heading to college, the Senators used a fifth round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft on Cook. The New Jersey native recently saw limited playing time (12 games) as a rookie with Michigan and only had 2 points (both assists) in the 2003-04 season.

5th round, 142nd overall by Ottawa in 2003.

February 2006 Q&A with Cook

Talent Analysis

Cook is a defensive defenseman that brings some serious size to the table. At 6’4/215, it’s hard to miss him out on the ice and uses quite well to his advantage. He skates remarkably well for a man his size and possesses some good acceleration. His sheer size makes him a tough player to play against and around. He possesses a long reach and makes good outlet passes. He follows plays very well and his solid positionally. His play along the boards in addition to containing opposing players is quite good. He can deliver solid hard checks and isn’t afraid of the physical side of the game. Perhaps Cook’s greatest weakness is that despite having a very good, hard shot, he doesn’t shoot often enough.

Future

Big blueliners take a long time to develop, and Cook is very big. He’s also a long way away from seeing NHL action. After college, he would probably require some time in the AHL to adapt to the professional ranks. He is years away from pushing for a roster spot, if he ever does. That being said, Cook could one day make it based on the fact he is big, moves well and has impressive hockey sense.
