History

2009-10: Tom Wilson scored 44 goals with 61 assists and 140 penalty minutes in 73 games for the Toronto Junior Canadiens. He was selected by the Plymouth Whalers in the 2nd round (27th overall) of the 2010 OHL Priority Draft.

2010-11: Wilson skated in 28 games in his first OHL season with Plymouth and played for Team Ontario in the 2011 U17 World Hockey Challenge. He scored 3 goals with 3 assists and was an even plus/minus with 71 penalty minutes. Plymouth advanced to the second round after finishing third in the West Division but Wilson did not play any playoff games. In four games at the WHC he had 1 assist with 6 penalty minutes.

2011-12: Wilson led the Plymouth Whalers in penalty minutes during the regular season and was the team's second-leading scorer in the OHL playoffs. He had 141 penalty minutes in just 49 games, finishing plus-17 with 9 goals and 18 assists. After finishing first in the West in the regular season, the Whalers advanced to the second round. In 13 playoff games Wilson scored 7 goals with 6 assists and was plus-ten with 39 penalty minutes. Wilson was ranked 15th amongst North American skaters in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2012 NHL Draft.

 

Talent Analysis

Wilson projects as a power forward with some potential for offensive contributions.  At 6-4 and 200 pounds, Wilson already has good size, and he isn't afraid to make use of his size advantage.  And there is room for him to add some muscle to his frame.  Wilson's skating is adequate, good enough for him to cause some havoc in the offensive zone.  What remains to be seen is whether the big winger can develop his offensive skills – it will be the difference between Wilson being a top 6  forward or a 4th-line energy player.

 

 

Future

Wilson will likely spend another year in juniors beyond 2012-13, but could play in the AHL as soon as next season.

 

Spring brings new look to Washington Capitals Top 20

The Washington Capitals spring top 20 has a much different look than the fall edition. Braden Holtby graduated and Filip Forsberg (NAS), Zach Hamill (BOS), and Kevin Marshall (TOR) have been traded. Riley Barber had a breakout season and debuts in the top 10, while Michael Latta, Casey Wellman, Nicolas Deschamps, and Chay Genoway all were acquired via trade. Recent free agent signing from the University of Minnesota, Nate Schmidt, joins the list and is among the Capitals top prospects.

The Washington Capitals do not possess many prospects in the junior level this season and those they do have are all from the 2012 draft class. This is not an indication of thin talent for the Capitals, but that many of their prospects are taking different routes such as NCAA or playing in Europe.

The Washington Capitals have done of lot of building from within over the last few years. As a result, the prospect depth has taken quite a hit. However, there was a bit of a rebuild after the 2012 NHL entry draft. While the Capitals organization has plenty of depth, the number of high end prospects is limited and many other prospects are long-term projects.

Many potential breakout candidates in Washington Capitals’ system

As the 2012-13 season gets under way, the Washington Capitals have many prospects hoping to take their game to the next level. With the exception of Braden Holtby and Dmitri Orlov, most young players with the Capitals have not been affected by the NHL lockout. The Capitals system has a few blue chip prospects mixed in with a larger group of lower end prospects, who have opportunities to step up and prove themselves as true NHL prospects. Players like Connor Carrick, Garrett Mitchell, and Caleb Herbert are not as well known as players like Holtby, Yevgeni Kuznetsov, and Filip Forsberg, but all are worth keeping an eye on this season.
