History

2008-09: Tomas Kundratek spent his first season in North America with Medicine Hat (WHL) and made his AHL debut, appearing in one game with Hartford in the AHL playoffs. After missing the first month of the season with a broken finger, Kundratek started to play with Medicine Hat in late October. He quickly became a force on the ice and adjusted well to the North American style of play. In 51 games with the Tigers he scored 4 goals with 19 assists and was +8 with 63 PMs. Three of Kundratek's four regular season goals were with the extra man. Kundratek skated for the Czech Republic in the 2009 World Junior U-20 championship and had six assists (tops amongst Czech defensemen) in six games though the team did not reach the medal round.

2009-10: Kundratek was one of three Medicine Hat defensemen with 30 or more points in his second WHL season as the Tigers finished third in the Central Divison. In 65 regular season games he scored 2 goals with 33 assists and was +13 with 63 PMs. Kundratek skated in all 12 playoff games and was +3 with 1 goal, 5 assists, and 23 PMs. His only playoff goal was scored on the power play.

2010-11: Kundratek moved into pro hockey as a 20-year old, skating for the Rangers' AHL affiliate Connecticut. In 70 games he scored 2 goals with 10 assists and was an even plus/minus with 42 PMs. The Whale finished third in the Atlantic Division and Kundratek played in all six games in the Whale's first round playoff loss to Portland. He was -2 with 2 assists and 2 PMs in the playoffs.

2011-12: Kundratek made his NHL debut – appearing in five January games with the Capitals – after being obtained by Washington in a trade with the Rangers in October 2011. He was an even plus-minus with no points and 2 penalty minutes; averaging 9:45 minutes of ice time with the Caps. He began the season with New York AHL affiliate Connecticut; skating in seven games and finishing minus-one with 2 assists and 2 penalty minutes prior to  the trade. Kundratek played 55 games with Caps' affiliate Hershey, scoring 12 goals with 11 assists, and was plus-three with 34 penalty minutes. Hershey reached the playoffs after finishing third in the East Division. Kundratek played in 4 of 5 games in the Bears' series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and was minus-three with 4 assists and 4 penalty minutes.

Talent Analysis

Kundratek is a solid defensive defenseman, who is a good puck mover with a nice shot. He has good height, but still needs to fill out and get stronger.

The Washington Capitals spring top 20 has a much different look than the fall edition. Braden Holtby graduated and Filip Forsberg (NAS), Zach Hamill (BOS), and Kevin Marshall (TOR) have been traded. Riley Barber had a breakout season and debuts in the top 10, while Michael Latta, Casey Wellman, Nicolas Deschamps, and Chay Genoway all were acquired via trade. Recent free agent signing from the University of Minnesota, Nate Schmidt, joins the list and is among the Capitals top prospects.

The Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, did not get as much help as many AHL teams did with the lockout. The team has struggled at times offensively, but has stayed in contention because of the play of goaltender Braden Holtby. With the NHL lockout over, Holtby was recalled to the big club, paving the way for Philipp Grubauer to lead the Bears in net.

The Washington Capitals have done of lot of building from within over the last few years. As a result, the prospect depth has taken quite a hit. However, there was a bit of a rebuild after the 2012 NHL entry draft. While the Capitals organization has plenty of depth, the number of high end prospects is limited and many other prospects are long-term projects.

The Washington Capitals used the 2012 NHL draft as an opportunity to restock their prospect pool by adding 10 new players. Among the new additions are a mix of players who should have an impact in the next couple years, along with some longer term projects.
