2011-12: Travis Konecny appeared in three games with the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs minor midget AAA team in Ontario as a 14-year-old; spending most of the season on the club’s bantam AAA team. He scored 3 goals with 4 assists with the midget squad.

2012-13: Konecny was a team captain for the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs minor midget AAA team. He scored 31 goals with 35 assists and 72 penalty minutes in 27 regular season games. He scored 7 goals with 11 assists and 43 penalty minutes in 11 Alliance league playoff games. The Chiefs participated in the OHL Cup and in five games Konecny scored 3 goals with 8 assists and 10 penalty minutes. He was selected by the Ottawa 67s with the first overall pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Draft.

2013-14: Konecny made his OHL debut as a 16-year-old — skating in 63 regular season games for the Ottawa 67’s in his first season — and played for the Canada U18 team at the 2014 World Junior Championship and for Canada Ontario in the 2014 World Hockey Challenge. Konecny scored 26 goals with 44 assists and was -15 with 18 penalty minutes skating for Ottawa. The 67’s finished fifth in the East Division, missing the OHL playoffs. Konecny scored 4 goals with 1 assist and was +4 with 2 penalty minutes for the bronze medal-winning Canada squad at the WJC in Finland. He scored 1 goal with 3 assists and 8 penalty minutes in five games as a team captain for fifth-place Canada Ontario in the WHC.

2014-15: Konecny was a team captain for the Ottawa 67’s in his second OHL season after playing for the gold medal Canada U18 team at the 2014 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in August. He scored 29 goals with 39 assists and was -1 with 34 penalty minutes in 60 regular season games. Ottawa finished second in the East Division, reaching the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Konecny returned to the lineup for Game 2 of the first-round series against Niagara after missing time due to an upper-body injury late in the season. In five playoff games he scored 3 goals with 7 assists and was +4 with 6 penalty minutes. Konecny played for Team Orr in the 2015 CHL Top Prospects Game and was ranked 14th amongst North American skaters in the Central Scouting final rankings. He was selected by Philadelphia in the first round (24th overall) in the 2015 NHL Draft.

2015-16: Konecny signed a three-year entry-level contract with Philadelphia in July 2015 and attended his first training camp with the Flyers before returning to Ottawa for his third OHL season. He also skated for the Canada U20 team in the 2016 World Junior Championship. Konecny skated in 29 games with the Ottawa 67’s before being acquired by the Sarnia Sting in a mid-season trade. In 60 regular season games between the two teams he scored 30 goals with 71 assists and was +33 with 27 penalty minutes. Sarnia finished first in the West Division before falling to Sault Ste. Marie in seven games in a first-round playoff series. Hampered by a shoulder injury, Konecny played in two games against the Greyhounds, scoring 1 goal with 2 assists and finishing -2 with no penalties. Konecny scored 1 goal with 1 assist and was -1 in five games for Canada at the WJC. Canada finished sixth, losing 6-5 to eventual champion Finland in the quarterfinals.

Talent Analysis

Konecny fills a much-needed spot for the Flyers—forward depth. He’s the most talented Philadelphia prospect at his position, and has high upside. Konecny is a versatile offensive forward. He’s a great skater with a good shot, but needs to work on his defensive play. As captain of the Ottawa 67’s, he is known for his leadership skills, and he has spent time captaining Canada during international play as well.

Future

Konecny was one of the dominant forwards in the OHL in 2015-16, taking his game to another level after joining the Sarnia Sting. Young enough to return to the Sting (who are coached by former Flyers defenseman Derian Hatcher) next season, Konecny could push for a spot in the Flyers' opening night roster. With his offensive instincts, technical skills and skating ability he projects to being a top-six forward.

Forward Travis Konecny is one of a handful of Team Canada youngsters getting a taste of IIHF U18 World Championship action at an earlier age than might normally be the case. While many of the players taking part in this tournament are in their draft year, Konecny won't be eligible for the draft until the 2014-15 season.
