Tuomas Mikkonen

Prospect Grade: 3.0 A  (About Prospect Grades)

History

Mikkonen is a big, aggressive winger that has played for his hometown team in Finland, JYP. With JYP's junior team, he developed into an aggressive physical player that showed a little bit of offensive flair. During the 2001-02 season, that game got Mikkonen noticed, and he was called up the JYP pro team. He saw action in a limited role, and produced well for a player of his age in the pro league.

Mikkonen's first full pro season, the 2002-03 season, was just more of the same. Mikkonen was used as a grinding, energy forward, and with his big frame, he filled the role well. He carried this into the playoffs where he had a run-in with Stars prospect Jussi Jokinen, resulting in Mikkonen's suspension.

With SM-Liiga experience under his belt, Mikkonen was selected to join Finland's U20 WJC team in 2003. In the tournament, Mikkonen's role was limited, but he did manage to chip in a couple of points.

Talent Analysis

Strengths: Mikkonen has a pro sized frame and is not afraid to use it. He is very aggressive physically and is not afraid to drop the gloves. He possesses decent skills for a player his size.

Weaknesses: Mikkonen's offensive upside is hard to quantify since he has not really been given a chance to play quality minutes. His skating ability is relatively average.
