History
2007-08: As a 17-year-old, Tye McGinn got an opportunity to play with his older brother Jamie McGinn on the Ottawa 67's. His brother was traded, and he did not have a great season. In 59 games, he scored three goals and added eight assists. At the end of the season, he was cut by the 67's.
2008-09: After leaving the Ottawa 67's and the OHL behind him, McGinn traveled to the QMJHL. He found a home with the Gatineau Olympiques where he was given ice-time. In 48 games, he scored 8 goals and earned 22 assists for 30 points.
2009-10: McGinn broke out in a big way in 2009-10, becoming the Olympiques most important forward. In 50 games, he scored 27 goals and added 35 assists for 62 points.
2010-11: McGinn was Gatineau's second-leading scorer as a 20-year-old despite skating in just 42 games for the Olympiques. McGinn missed time early in the season and again later in the year yet scored 31 goals with 33 assists and had the Olympiques' second-best plus/minus (+30) with 39 PMs . Gatineau finished third in the QMJHL's competitive West Division. McGinn skated in 14 of 24 playoff games as the Olympiques reached the finals before falling to Memorial Cup champ Saint John. He scored 3 of his 5 playoff goals on the power play and had 8 assists with a +2 plus/minus and 17 PMs.
2011-12: Signed to a three-year, entry-level contract by the Flyers in July 2011, McGinn spent his first pro season with Philadelphia's AHL affiliate Adirondack. McGinn showed flashes of offensive potential, scoring 12 goals with 6 assists in 63 games for the Phantoms, and was minus-one with 45 penalty minutes in a limited role. Adirondack missed the AHL playoffs; finishing fourth in the Northeast Division.
Talent Analysis
Though his brother Jamie McGinn, who spent his entire career in the OHL and was drafted by the Sharks, has a decent offensive upside, Tye McGinn's offensive capabilities come up a little short. Even without the talent, he found a nice offensive niche for himself in the QMJHL by learning where to be on the ice. He's a smart hockey player with size and physicality. He fits the mold of a role-player who can fit in well with Philadelphia's system.
Future
McGinn is playing for the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL in 2012-13.
