History

2007-08: Tyler Johnson played for the WHL and Memorial Cup champion Spokane Chiefs in his first season of major junior hockey and was named MVP of the WHL Finals against Lethbridge. Johnson scored 13 goals with 22 assists and was +17 with 34 PMs in 69 regular season games. In 21 WHL playoff games he scored 5 goals with 3 assists and was +2 with 24 PMs. Johnson skated in all four Memorial Cup games and was +2 with 2 PMs.

2008-09: Johnson was the Spokane Chiefs' third-leading scorer as an 18-year-old and skated for Team USA at the 2009 U20 World Junior Championship. He scored 26 goals with 35 assists and was +26 with 52 PMs in 62 games as the Chiefs finished second in the US Division. Johnson scored 5 goals with 3 assists and had an even plus/minus with 8 PMs in 12 playoff games as the defending Memorial Cup champs were eliminated in the WHL quarterfinals. In six games with the fifth-place USA he had 1 goal and was -2 with 2 PMs.

2009-10: Johnson was the second-leading goal scorer for WHL Spokane and participated in his second world junior tournament. Johnson scored 36 goals with 35 assists and was +14 with 32 PMs on a Chiefs team that finished two points behind US DIvision champion and WHL playoff runner-up Tri-City. He scored 11 of his 36 goals on the power play. In seven playoff goes he scored 3 goals with 5 assists and was -1. Johnson scored 3 goals with 2 assists and was +4 with 25 PMs in seven games for gold medal-winning USA at the 2010 U20 World Junior Championship.

2010-11: Johnson skated for the MInnesota Wild in the Traverse City tournament and attended Wild camp but was not signed to a contract and returned to Spokane for an over-age season. Johnson led the WHL with 53 goals and was named to the WHL First All-Star team as a 20-year-old. In 71 games with the Chiefs he was +27 and had 62 assists. His 115 points were one behind WHL-leader Linden Vey (LAK). In fourteen playoff games for the Chiefs he scored 7 goals with 7 assists and was +3 with 9 PMs. Johnson signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Tampa Bay in March, 2011.

2011-12: Johnson was the third-leading scorer for Lightning AHL affiliate Norfolk in his first pro season. He scored 31goals with 37 assists and was plus-17 with 28 penalty minutes in 75 games. The Admirals captured the AHL's Calder Cup championship in the playoffs after finishing first in the East Division. Johnson had 6 goals with 8 assists in 14 playoff games and was plus-eight with 6 penalty minutes.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have a deep and talented affiliate in their AHL squad, the Syracuse Crunch. Several players have filtered through the Crunch recently to make it on the NHL ice with the Lightning, including: Cory Conacher, Alex Killorn, and Richard Panik. Currently, their offensive talent at the professional level is deeper than their defensive talent.

It seems that, as a general manager, Steve Yzerman can do no wrong. In his first year as the Tampa Bay Lightning's GM, Yzerman made a number of shrewd moves that helped put the team into the playoffs, and while they finished outside of the playoffs this past season, Yzerman has continued to build a winning system.

Several Norfolk Admirals players recognized in HF Prospect Awards

Though the Tampa Bay Lightning fell well short of an NHL playoff berth, many of the players affiliated with the organization still enjoyed a successful 2011-12 season. The greatest success was felt at the AHL level, where the Norfolk Admirals marched through the Calder Cup playoffs to a championship, posting a 15-3 record in the process and dominating the opposition at seemingly every turn.
