History
Vaclav Meidl had decided that his path of least resistance to the NHL is to play in circumstances condusive to North American hockey. After playing with three different teams over two years in the Under 18 Czech Extraliga, Meidl found the most success playing for Havirov Panthers. Meidl quickly moved through their organization from the Under 18 team up to the Under 20 team and finally receiving a call up to the senior Panther team in the Czech Extraliga. He also suited up for the Czech Under 18 National team for the World Junior Under 18 tournament. Meidl decided to come over to North America to pursue his hockey career and was drafted 9th overall in the 2003 CHL Import Draft. Meidl had a successful first season in North America scoring 14 goals and 28 assists for 42 points while adapting to the new culture.
Talent Analysis
Meidl has a good skill set that does translate to an NHL player if developed properly. His 6’4, 210 lb size lends to his physical game and is willing to take a hit to make a play. He is a good playmaker and is solid in the face-off circle. Meidl is a solid skater with both good speed and balance. He does need to improve his hockey sense and commitment to play at a high level to be successful in the future.
Future
Meidl has the size and skill to become a 2nd to 3rd line center, if he can channel his focus over a full season then he has a strong opportunity to realize his potential.
