History
Saponari is the first Georgia native (born and developed) player to be selected in the NHL Entry Draft. Eric Chouinard was born but not developed in Georgia. Dave Caruso was an undrafted free agent signed by the Thrashers who was developed in Georgia. A couple other undrafted players, Mark Mowers and Jean-Marc Pelletier, were born but not developed in the state.
2005-06: Saponari earned the Culver Military Academy’s top scorer award as he posted 53 points (16 goals, 37 assists).
2006-07: Saponari split the season with the U-17 and the U-18 squad and played very well for both teams. Despite playing in just 39 games for the U-17 team, close to 30 less than the teams total, Saponari was still one of the teams top scorers, ending up with 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists). Saponari played in 21 games for the U-18 team, ending up with seven points (four goals, three assists).
2007-08: Saponari played in all 57 games for the U-18 team, finishing in the top five on the team in points (36),.third on the team in assists (23), and sixth on the team in goals (13). According to NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings, Saponari is the 135th overall North American skater for the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
