History

In his four seasons in the WHL with the Seattle Thunderbirds he led the team in penalty minutes twice, by a wide margin, and was second on the team in the other two seasons.

Captained the United States U-18 National team at the Eight Nations Tournament in 2002.

3rd round (88th overall), 2003

2005-06: In his first professional season, split his time between the Alaska Aces of the ECHL and Peoria in the AHL. Apart from being a physical presence, FitzGerald is responsible in his own end and can also contribute offensively.

2006-07: Fitzgerald played just 39 games between the AHL (29) and ECHL (10), totallying three points in 134 penalty minutes between the Peoria Rivermen and the Alaska Aces.  The Canucks traded FP Guenette to acquire him in August.

2007-08: Fitzgerald played a  depth role with the Moose this season, stepping into the line-up on 48 occasions.  He scored a surprising five goals and added three assists.  He also dropped the mitts nine times en route to compiling 158 PIM.

Talent Analysis

One word comes to mind when mentioning FitzGerald's style of play: mean. Defensively responsible, offensively adequate, and very physical, the Seattle defenseman regularly ravages the opposition in his own end. One of the most feared enforcers in the WHL during his time, FitzGerald has led by example, taking matters into his own hands, and doing his best to prevent the opposition from taking liberties on his teammates.

Future

Fitzgerald is a tough guy with limited puck skills who is unlikely to be more than a third-pairing player regardless of the level he’s playing at.  He will most likely find himself a job as an AHL enforcer, but could see sporadic call-ups to the NHL because of his willingness to fight.
