The hockey world held its collective breath when Connor McDavid crashed into the end boards in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers three months ago. Since then, Dylan Larkin and Artemi Panarin took the lead in the race for the Calder Trophy, but Connor McDavid may still sneak back into the discussion if he keeps up his current scoring pace. In this week’s Prospect Faceoff, two OHL players who were traded for each other go one-on-one against their old teams for the first time . We’ll check in with Daniel Sprong and Mikko Rantanen, who both enjoyed valuable time in the NHL this year. The “Battle of Pennsylvania” gets a glimpse of the future when prospects of the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins go head-to-head, and two of the WHL’s finest defenders are heading in different directions.

Unlike the previous article, which detailed the Edmonton Oilers’ mere three junior prospects, the NHL team has a staggering 22 names in its professional pipeline. A number of these pro players are on the verge of graduating as they continue to log NHL minutes, such as Iiro Pakarinen, Darnell Nurse and Brandon Davidson, and for the sake of keeping things concise, this month’s article will focus on those players who have spent the majority of the 2015-16 season at the AHL or ECHL level. The talented collection of forwards and defensemen that Team Sweden brought to the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship overshadowed the goaltenders on that country’s WJC roster, but it was goaltender Linus Soderstrom that won the day in Sweden’s 1-0 win over the USA on Day 3 in Helsinki, Finland.
