The Tampa Bay Lightning have done a tremendous job at drafting and developing since Steve Yzerman took over the general manager position in 2010. The team has more hits than misses in the early rounds and has found quality late-round players that have since filled significant roles with the team. Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov are two that immediately come to mind and both players were selected in 2011, the first draft that Yzerman and his staff had a full year to prepare for. It might also end up as the team’s best in the past decade-plus. Read more»

The eighth KHL season has begun as this year, the league’s first game – the Opening Cup game between SKA St. Petersburg and CSKA Moscow – took place on August 24th. The reason for the early start is that the 2016 IIHF World Championship will be held in Russia, and therefore the league will need to finish a bit earlier than usual to accommodate the international competition. Less than two weeks after his team lost in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, Tampa Bay Lightning General Manager Steve Yzerman went back to work at maintaining a strong foundation for his team through the draft. With a young roster on the rise that perhaps arrived as a legitimate contender a year early, Yzerman didn’t have any particular needs to fill at the 2015 NHL Draft. Instead, he replenished his team’s system with players of quality character and skill. Read more»

A trip to the Stanley Cup Finals guaranteed the Tampa Bay Lightning‘s first round pick would be either 29th or 30th overall, but that pick was dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers in the Braydon Coburn trade prior to the deadline. Fortunately, the Lightning also owned the New York Rangers’ first round pick, acquired in last year’s Martin St. Louis/Ryan Callahan swap. Read more»
